About the Author
James R. Woodworth has been a member of the Department of Political Science at Miami University (Ohio) since 1948. He received a Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University and had a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota. He has served in several administrative positions at Miami University, including the chair of the Department of Political Science, and associate dean of the College of Arts and Science. Dr. Woodworth has been a member of the Oxford City Council, chaired the Oxford Charter Commission and served as a trustee for a local hospital and as a consultant to the Fairfield (Ohio) Charter Commission. His publications include ATLANTIS: ROLE-PLAYING SIMULATIONS FOR THE STUDY OF AMERICAN POLITICS (with Robert Gump), PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE, plus articles.

W. Robert Gump has been a member of the Department of Political Science at Miami University (Ohio) since 1962. He received a Ph.D. in political science from The Ohio State University and a J.D. from the University of Michigan. He was admitted to practice at the Ohio Bar in 1952. Dr. Gump has served as chairman of the Oxford City Planning Commission, as a trustee for a local hospital, and as a consultant to the Charles F. Kettering foundation, the City of Dayton Charter Reciew Committee, the City of Middletown Charter Review Committee, and the City of Hamilton Charter Review Committee. His publications include ATLANTIS: ROLE-PLAYING SIMULATIONS FOR THE SUTYD OF AMERICAN POLITICS (with James R. Woodworth), plus articles.

James R. Forrester has been a faculty member of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at West Libery State College (West Virginia) since 1969. He received his Ph.D. in political science from West Virginia University in 1979. He is a member of the Bethany (West Virginia) Town Council and has been a presidential election consultant for WTOV � Channel 0, Steubenville/Wheeling. His publications include GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS IN WEST VIRGINIA: READINGS, CASES AND COMMENTARIES, 5th edition, plus articles.

I am almost done with the book, overall I understand the point of view of the writer, but adversely the writer seems strictly to adhere to a extreme liberal philosophy. Where government is the answer for all problems facing society. Where have we as a American society splintered off to consider ourselves in separate American Categories instead of One Nation.

I'm a clerk for two local commissions in my city, and the information I've read in this book is a similar model of our meetings. The chapters are not lengthy, but the authors managed to touch on pertinent details involved within resident and voting members activity. Well worth the read!

About the Author

Kathrin Fahlenbrach is Professor of Media Studies at the University of Hamburg, Germany. She is the author of Audiovisual Metaphors: Embodied and Affective Aesthetics of Film and Television (2010) and co-editor of Media and Revolt: Strategies and Performances from the 1960s to the Present (2014).

Martin Klimke is Associate Professor at New York University Abu Dhabi. He is the author of The Other Alliance: Global Protest and Student Unrest in West Germany and the US, 1962–1972 (2010) and co-author of A Breath of Freedom: The Civil Rights Struggle, African‐American GIs, and Germany (2010).

Joachim Scharloth is Professor of Applied Linguistics at Technische Universit�t Dresden. His publications include 1968 in Europe: A History of Protest and Activism, 1956-1977 (2008) and Between Prague Spring and French May: Opposition and Revolt in Europe, 1960-1980 (2011), both co-edited with Martin Klimke.

The "prize" that the movement has sought has often been reduced to a quest for the vote in the South. But all involved in the struggle have always known that the prize is much more than the vote, that the goal is economic as well as political. Further, in distinction from other work, Civil Rights Since 1787 establishes the links between racial repression and the repression of labor and the left, and emphasizes the North as a region of civil rights struggle.

Featuring the voices and philosophies of orators, activists, and politicians, this anthology emphasizes the role of those ignored by history, as well as the part that education and religion have played in the movement. His work has appeared in The Guardian, New Politics, Socialism & Democracy, New Political Science, and other publications. He lives in Illinois.

Clarence Taylor is Professor of History at Baruch College, CUNY, and author of The Black Churches of Brooklyn, Knocking at Our Own Door: Milton Galamison and the Struggle to Integrate New York City Schools and most recently Black Religious Intellectuals: The Fight for Equality from Jim Crow to the 21st Century.

Civil Rights Since 1787 is a reader on the black struggle since 1787 that provides a powerful collection of articles which rewrites history, charting an earlier struggle for civil rights than most titles would present and using primary documents and secondary analysis to spice the presentation. Works by DuBois, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Baker, Manning Marable and more are outstanding presentations.

If you really want to know what the Civil Rights Movement accomplished, you should read this novel that has annotations and reference pages. The book quotes Reconstruction and Civil Rights experts.

The book details how blacks were able to manage schools,the limit and broadness of the tobacco trade, the labor movement and how the African-American struggle assisted this movement.

The book gives statistics that purport the glass ceiling. It is an informative text that should be read by people who want to appreciate and comprehend the history of struggles for equality.

i haven't read this book but.......

this guy is my professor this semester, i figured a little sucking up wouldn't hurt. on a more serious note, i have to admit that mr. taylor (smart-ass comments aside) is fully versed on a number of historical themes, it is truly admirable. he seems to be a strict individual but not to the point of being unyielding. i trust that his book will be an engaging read.

A must for every American!

[[VIDEOID:mo2JJYZGYEPZHAU]]This is must for every American who is learning or will learn Russian (reading, writing or speaking). I didn't get this till I was about a year into the country, and what a difference it made! I had been using a small pocket dictionary that was based on British English, so some words weren't included. This though.. wow!

The author makes it very easy to look words up, gives their meaning and indicates what type of word it is (noun/adjective). What is really important, and key to the foundations of Russian Grammar is the noun declination he lists and verb conjugation. Two very important things that he gives a section to before diving into the book!

He does have a thorough list of words for American English (25,000) and Russian (40,000) so 60,000 all together. Very useful for the American that wants to discuss and talk about American English, culture, slang and more! A must!

Easy to use, for Russians and Americans.

I used this when I lived in Saint Petersburg while staying with a Russian host family. This was one of the only ways that we could communicate! In fact, we just kept it on the kitchen table so that we could look up anything we needed to.
The dictionary is pretty huge and inclusive. You can find pretty much any word you're looking for. If you are new to the language, I would recommend getting sticky note tabs to mark where each new letter starts, otherwise you'll spend a lot of time flipping.
I only wish that it was a little bit smaller so I could carry it around, but you can find phrase books for that.

Great Dictionary

This is a great dictionary. In fact, my husband and I have had this dictionary for almost 10 years and stupidly I left it out in the rain a day or two ago. Needless to say, I placed an order for a replacement immediately through Amazon. I would not even consider another dictionary. I bought the Oxford Pocket Dictionary at a library sale for a buck or two that we keep in the car, and it is practically useless in my opinion. It just reaffirmed my high opinion of this dictionary. Katzner's dictionary is laid out well, offers phrases using many of the entries and is just indispensable for someone wanting to learn russian. In fact, a russian friend of ours said my russian was "unexpectedly rich" and thought maybe we had russian literature lying around the house. I totally give this dictionary credit. I hope my replacement arrives soon!

The book does not miss a single emotional beat, taking every opportunity to demonstrate that Lurlene McDaniel has no stranglehold on jerking tears as Steven details the progress of leukemia's inexorable attack. If the young characters sometimes speak beyond their years and if Steven's wise-ass voice is initially annoying, it is also fresh, energetic, and consistent, becoming more likable as the novel progresses. Mrs. Alper's days and nights revolve around getting Jeffrey to his chemotherapy treatments, and Mr. Alper retreats into a shell, coming out only occasionally to weep over the mounting medical bills. Steven becomes the forgotten son, who throws himself into drumming, even as he quits doing his homework and tries to keep his friends from finding out about Jeffrey's illness. A story that could have morphed into melodrama is saved by reality, rawness, and the wit Sonnenblick infuses into Steven's first-person voice. The recriminations, cares, and nightmares that come with a cancer diagnosis are all here, underscored by vomiting, white blood cell counts, and chemotherapy ports. Yet, this is also about regrouping, solidarity, love, and hope. Most important for a middle-grade audience, Sonneblick shows that even in the midst of tragedy, life goes on, love can flower, and the one thing you can always change is yourself. Ilene Cooper

he loved it enough to want me to read it so ...

I read this book based on the recommendation of my youngest son. He is reading this book in his Literacy class in 6th Grade and even half way through, he loved it enough to want me to read it so we could "talk about it." I happen to read faster than my son, especially since he's only reading during class time (this is a group read,) but I enjoyed it as well.

The title does not give any clues as to what the subject matter will be, and I hadn't read any blurbs so I was in for an emotional ride when I got to the heart of the story. Be prepared for some tears and heartache as you read. But, in the same way stories like The Fault in Our Stars or Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, there will be times when you find humor in the telling as well. The blending and merging of these two vastly different emotions is quite often a pleasant experience. I was also very impressed with the writing style and the voice being used to tell the story. I find it so rare in my reading to have a adolescent male point of view. So often, young adult books are told from a female perspective. Without giving spoilers, I have to say that I also like that the story is told from the perspective of a sibling of whom the main part of the story is about. I am definitely impressed that the school my children go to is using this book in their 6th grade classes, and I think it's a good one for young adults to read.

Five stars isn't enough

I'm not normally a big fan of realistic fiction, but I picked this book up after it was recommended to me by some friends. I put it off for about three years before I broke down and bought the book. Thankfully it did not disappoint.
Steven is a normal eighth grade boy. He's in band and has a crush on a girl way out of his league. He lives with his brother (Jeffery) and two parents. His life is fairly stable. One of the biggest problems he has is a brother about eight years younger than him who finds pleasure in making his older brother miserable. When a nose bleed turns bad, he finds himself living in his brothers shadow. He begins to wish that his little brother could be like he was before October, when he had the life changing nose bleed. This book deals with the topic of childhood cancer with a new angle. Trust me when I say that people tend to forget about the brothers and sisters of those diagnosed. They see it all. The book goes at the topic in a way that not many books do. The characters seemed real. Several times I wanted to talk with Steven so badly it hurt.
This book seemed to get a little close to home. I know a girl whose younger brother was diagnosed with cancer when he was three. She was in middle school like Steven and many of the things I saw her go through, Steven went through as well. So many of the small things added up. When Steven called Jeffy buddy boy reminded me of all the times I've called my own brother that. Steven's world is real, and this book crafted it perfectly.

I loved the book. Stories about kids with cancer beak my heart and this one as no exception. But it also had moments of joy and moments of praise for Steven. I would recommend the book to anyone looking for a heart touching story.
