Not for the faint of heart

In Born Liars Ian Leslie dissects deceit through the lens of law, psychology and culture. It's a fascinating ride, but I wouldn't recommend the central section which covers self-deception for anyone feeling squeamish about their own illusions. Leslie unpacks many of the cognitive biases we have towards viewing ourselves positively and reading this book may just remove those illusions.

The first few chapters are recommended to all however, especially anyone enamoured with the idea of lie-detecting, whether with machine or person (spoiler its really hard to detect lies)

The last section on the culture of lying is eye-opening to say the least. The only flaw being a lack of depth and details.

In short Born Liars is a great read. Leslie errs away from his own opinion and reasoning (and I would have liked to hear his thesis), and relies heavily on other's academic material, making this book a strong technical piece, but perhaps lacking a personal touch or point.

Nonetheless recommended.

Are We Liars by Default?

Lie is universally condemned. Since childhood, we were taught not to lie. However, the fact remains the same: people lie. Quite often, they lie without even realizing what they are doing. People are lying to others, but, mostly, to themselves.

I would not recommend this book as a moral guidance or a practical to-do manual for those who want to stop lying. However, it is deep and insightful in its approach. The author makes a point that lie is a part of our nature. Humans learned to lie at earliest stages of their development, and it is quite possible that lie helped us to evolve and to become as smart as we are now.

There is no wonder that lie is closely related to creative imagination. As a rule, liars are better adapted socially, since they can 'read' thoughts and feelings of others. On the other hand, some of mentally handicapped people don't lie and can't recognize when they're lied to.

One of the worst forms of deception is a self-deception, so the book tells of what we habitually do to distort our perception of reality.

Having said all that, the author still believes (like every rational person does) that lying is wrong. But we need to be aware of the context in which lying occurs, along with underlying psychological mechanisms of lying. Only then we'll be able to successfully (more or less) live up to a moral code that requires truthfulness.

"My invisible string is really long, since MeMe and Paw are in Heaven"

We recently had a tragedy in my family and I lost both my sister and brother-in-law in a boating accident. My great-niece (their granddaughter) lived with them and I became very concerned with how she would handle these sudden deaths. I bought this book because of the reviews and I'm SO GLAD I did!! My great-niece looked at her mom the other day and told her that her invisible string is really long because it reaches MeMe and Paw all the way in heaven. Talk about tears, but such a relief that she knows they are watching her and love her. My fear was that she would think they just left.

Thank you for such a phenomenal book that was interpreted correctly by my smart, beautiful 6 year old great-niece

the story lends itself to deeper conversations about love and interconnectedness

I discovered this book, The Invisible String, when my toddler started having separation anxiety. This book is deeply meaningful and has been an invaluable tool in our home!

As a mother of two young children, I am always looking for books that have relatable characters, carry a strong message and show healthy ways to process feelings. The Invisible String does all of that and more. My three-year-old son loves reading about Liza and Jeremy. He asks me lots of questions about the twins and is curious about each page of the book. Additionally, the story lends itself to deeper conversations about love and interconnectedness. I feel so fortunate to have this book as an anchor for our conversations.

After reading this book, my son and I started wearing an “invisible string” on our wrists, which my son pulls on when he misses me. He has been wearing it for over a year now and it is such a comfort to him. I really recommend this book!

Not Her Best, But Not Bad

This is another fun romp by Ms. Napier. The heroine, Honor, believes she's been getting secret admirer letters and she's been writing right back to her Romeo with some steamy prose of her own. Imagine her surprise when this innocent pseudo-relationship opens a Pandora's box that frightens, angers and frustrates her.

Adam is a handsome, rich man used to having his own way, so he's taken aback when Helen, whom he originally characterizes as a "dumpling," stands right up to him. Adam has a sweet, meddling Mom who would like nothing better than for Honor and Adam to settle down and create more little dumplings for her to enjoy. Adam's young daughter Sarah becomes a fan of Honor as well, so it should all be smooth-sailing, right?

Uh, not so much. Adam's sister-in-law is a witchy woman with a proprietal air towards Honor's love interest. Honor's sister Helen, a slim, blonde model, also stirs this pot. Funniest scene of the book: when Honor warns Helen off Adam. Cracked me up and I had to re-read that scene several times it was so good. Other good Napier books: Counterfeit Secretary, Secret Admirer, Honeymoon Baby, or The Cruellest Lie.

Star-Crossed Lovers

I truly enjoy reading books by Susan Napier because she is more apt to write more realisticly. Her heroes and heroines are'nt always perfect in looks or personality. She will likely surprise you with some little quirky detail which to me are sometimes hilarious.
Adam and Honor are corresponding due to a strange mistaken identity problem. When they finally meet face to face, neither of them are impressed with the other. In fact, they really are almost enemies at first. True to form, Susan Napier has you waiting as you turn each page to come to the wonderful conclusion. The heroine of this novel is not exactly a waiflike model figure and the hero turns out to be a very honest and true person, who is not at all phased by this, which in this world of anorexic phrenia is a pleasure to read about. I enjoyed this book immensely.

Honor Sheldon has been receiving letters from Adam Blake . . . letters that seemed to get steamier as time went on and the correspondence continued. Honor honestly thought all the letters were meant for her, but the last one mentions her sister, Helen - the beautiful model, by name! Honor feels "honor bound" to advise Adam of his mistake in person. She goes to his house and through a series of events she is taken for someone who is blackmailing the Blake family. She is promptly accosted by Adam Blake, taken to the police station for a shake down, and soon released after explaining some very embarrassing things. Then of course Mr. Blake is B&E her home! Adam "kidnaps" Honor and admits that it helps to have a higher standing in the community because for some reason he is above the law. He tells Honor that she needs to stay w/ his family as the blackmailer may go after her.

Adam really wanted Helen as the last letter specifically mentions her by name. So it is completely understandable what Honor thinks later and a litter dirty of Adam to do what he did.

They snarl and snap at each other throughout the story, and it is rather amusing. However, that cat, Monty, adds so much to this story. He is freaking hilarious!!

Honor had foolishly fallen in love w/ her Phantom lover via letters and the real flesh and blood man isn't like that . . . so far. Eventually Adam wants Honor to speak of her feelings first. He appeared to be unsure of himself even though Honor thought of him as being arrogant. Perhaps he was in some things, but not as far as body image as he is sensitive in some areas in that regard. So he had to be reassured and secure in her feelings for him first. I didn't understand that at first, but once pieces were put together (i.e. woman from his past, and his body issue) it became apparent.

Examples are a cost-utility ratio, a cost-effectiveness ratio, the net monetary benefit, or a total budget impact estimate. Cost-effectiveness analysis is a specific type of formalized economic evaluation commonly used in the consideration of economic evidence in health care. It typically focuses on the incremental changes in costs and health benefits after the introduction of a medical intervention as compared to an initial situation, and is meant to aid rational decisionmaking. This type of analysis has become the most common mechanism for generating economic evidence in decisionmaking both inside and outside the United States. Evidence from systematic reviews of clinical outcomes presently plays an established role in determining the comparative effectiveness of medical interventions and is useful in developing clinical practice guidelines, making efficacy-based coverage decisions, and in formulating general health policy. The processes of searching for and summarizing the results of studies have been standardized with the goal of demonstrating clinical efficacy and effectiveness in a uniform way, using all available information. A very complete book about the game of Chess

A very complete book about the game of Chess. If you are a total newbie this is the perfect book to start and hit the ground running. My favorite part of the book was Chapter 8, TIPS on playing winning Chess. The tips are great because like everything else you gotta have a plan and the tips in this chapter focus on the mindset and strategies you gotta have going into a game of Chess so that you can have the best possible outcome on any Chess game. Like everything else you have to put the learnings into practice but I totally recommend this one either if you are a newbie or are constantly studying the game of Chess to get an advantage.

Chess 101 is a really great guide that literally takes you from a blank game board and slowly step by step moves you up. I've actually been afraid to play just Cuz it looks so complex!! Lol

Well the author has cleverly changes my tune here. I'm gonna learn the game and beat my kids!

Great book I recommend you buy if you want to learn the game!

Likes - Approachable writing style. I read this book in an afternoon and, even as a novice, found it helpful.

Dislikes - I wish it contained more strategy. He does mention in the beginning, however, that this is not a book dedicated to strategy. So I really can't complain.

Recommended Audience - Very early beginners will find this book to be a nice introduction to chess. I definitely recommend it for early players.

Clear and engaging

This textbook covers complicated topics very clearly, with up-to-date examples and frank discussions of issues that students really wonder about (e.g., why do some people say "birfday"). Some typical topics are not included, such as allophones. Other less typical topics are included, such as x-bar theory. The kindle availability is a plus. No one I know can figure out what the image on the cover is supposed to be.

What a fun story! I loved joining Faro and River in therir adventures as I learned about the old West and cattle drives. The life of a cowboy was hard, and this book really makes you understand that. But it was fun also, and after following this bunch of "drovers", I wished I could go with them! I really enjoyed the clever, descriptive writing of Paul Grella. I hope he follows up with more stories of these two characters when they arrive in Paramour!

My last two reporters have been hired as multi-media reporters even though they only do a little web work but we at least need a text with some introduction to the idea. I can give half the class an exercise to do from the book while I work in an adjacent studio with the other half of the class on production techniques. I would describe its approach as straight-forward and hands-on, with more emphasis on doing than on theory. I believe its main strengths are the number and variety of the exercises. Perhaps the weakness would be that the exercises may be a little generic. I believe the Hewitt book is a good example of the importance of learning by doing. The book gives enough explanation to stimulate thought, then reinforces the thought with practice. I believe a new edition could be made a bit more current for students today. Practice and Well Written

This book was used for an intro to broadcast writing class. It is designed as a workbook. Contains examples and instructions for writing radio and tv scripts. Explains all the different types of scripts. All of the exercises are well written and easy to follow. It really helped me improve my broadcast style.
