About the Author
Pir Netanel (Mu’in ad-din) Miles-Y�pez, D.D., is the current head of the Inayati-Maimuni lineage of Sufism, co-founded with Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, fusing the Sufi and Hasidic principles of spirituality and practice espoused by Rabbi Avraham Maimuni in 13th-century Egypt with the teachings of the Ba’al Shem Tov and Hazrat Inayat Khan. He studied History of Religions at Michigan State University and Contemplative Religion at the Naropa Institute before pursuing traditional studies in both Sufism and Hasidism with Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and various other teachers, including Pir Puran Bair and Thomas Atum O’Kane. He likewise counts Father Thomas Keating as an important influence. He has been deeply involved in ecumenical dialogue and is considered a leading thinker in the InterSpiritual and New Monasticism movements. He is the co-author of two critically acclaimed commentaries on Hasidic spirituality, A Heart Afire: Stories and Teachings of the Early Hasidic Masters (2009) and A Hidden Light: Stories and Teachings of Early HaBaD and Bratzlav Hasidism (2011), the editor of The Common Heart: An Experience of Interreligious Dialogue (2006) and Living Fully, Dying Well: Reflecting on Death to Find Your Life’s Meaning (2009). He currently teaches Contemplative Islam and Sufism in the Department of Religious Studies at Naropa University.

Tough Going on the Best Book in Town

For most folks putting together a video, Adobe Premier Elements or Corel VideoStudio is probably sufficient. However, when a person wants to play with the big guys, he or she has to move up to one of the big guy editors like Final Cut or Adobe Premier Pro. There is just so much more that is possible in the senior software. The problem is learning to use that software. Some folks like videos for instruction, but I'm more of a book person. Unfortunately, when it comes to the 2017 release of Adobe Premier Pro, other than a few poorly rated self-published pamphlets, this is the only book in town.

The book consists of a series of hands-on tutorial lessons covering everything from opening up the software to outputting the files as viewable videos and movies. The tutorials actually require one to follow along, using Premier Pro. Each lesson is supported by a series of files to work on. In the paper version, a DVD is included in the back of the book with the necessary files.

The book is technically correct and well written, but a major problem is that Premier Pro itself offers many menus and a very crowded computer screen. Often a tutorial instruction will tell the reader to press a small triangle to disclose a panel or make a setting. Unfortunately, finding that triangle may be very difficult. If the book had had twice as many pages it might have contained illustrations that showed exactly where these buttons and switches are, but in the context of the book length, there's just no room for such illustrations. As a result, I spent far more time searching the screen for a button than actually doing the tutorial. The beginning of each chapter suggests a time to complete the lesson, but I took me two or three times as long because of the frustrating searches through the software. The good news is that when I found the switch, the tutorial was spot on and effective in teaching me to use the feature.

The files on the disk also left something to be desired. For access speed, you are to transfer them to your local drive. For whatever reason when I opened a tutorial project, Premier Pro often told me it couldn't find the supporting files and opened the Link Media dialog. I then had to search for the files in the transferred lesson file, which was not difficult but time consuming. Once, I was unable to connect to a transferred file and had to link directly to the file on the DVD. To be fair the book warned me this might happen and the Link Media dialog is not hard to use.

The book only describes the technical aspects of Premier Pro and not the artistic uses. For example, there are plenty of different transitions available to apply between clips. One of these may well be the best for telling your story but nothing in this book will tell you how to decide which one.

For folks planning to get the e-book, I was unsuccessful in getting the downloaded lesson files from the publisher to unzip, which meant that I was unable to do the tutorials with those files.

For those looking to learn to use a full featured video editor, this book did the job, although not without some frustration and lots of work.

Una guia hasta una vida mas tranquila

Compre este libro para mehorar me espanol. Estoy leyendo las version Ingles - he pasado 3 veces por el libro hasta ahora, sobre los ultimos tres anos. Las palabras dentro son muy poderosas para tranquilizarse - para darse mas control sobre todos aspectos de la vida, empezando con la idea de vivir afuera del comparmento de la mente. La mente - los pensimientos de juzguia - pensemientos de temor, pensamientos de amor - pero todos pensamientos constantamente - la idea de cerrar la mente y despertar de los suenos. La vida es en este momento, no en el futuro, no en el pasado. Pero muy poco de nosotros estamos despertados, en realidad. Muy pocos. Yo tampoco. Pero mas calma que antes. Vale la pena!

Not a good selection

The choices of stories in this book are not very good. Some of them are repeats of other anthologies. Others are do not present very original ideas. I couldn't really get into any stories in this book. It's average at best.

The stories in this book are more like an authors notes than finished work. With the exception of two stories in this collection, they appeared to be a rambling unconnected assortment of pointles writing exercises. Save your money.

Disappointing Anthology for the Turn of the Millennium

Science fiction is an immensely broad category. It encompasses stories as diverse as standard monster fare (the movie ALIEN, for example), social satire (the TV series THIRD ROCK FROM THE SUN, the movie THE BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET), farce (THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS), adventure (STAR WARS) as well as more traditionally science oriented tales of our society (1984) or imaginary worlds far beyond ours (2001) and much more. Editing an anthology which proports to represent the best short science fiction published in a year must be an incredibly demanding task, and David Hartwell is to be commended for attempting to represent a fair share of this variety. But if this book genuinely represents the best of SF published in 1999, I have to wonder if some bizarre millennial fever didn't strike the SF world a bit early. As SF writers are, by definition, imaginative folks, did they as a group get a bit too worked up worrying about Y2K to concentrate on their writing? Well, of course not; and interestingly enough there is no looming sense of catastrophe in the vast majority of this anthology. Instead, the tales generally treasure our humanity over technology and offer a hopeful view of the future (with a few notable exceptions). And yet...
Hartwell's anthology is sizable, containing 25 short stories. Of these, less than half were memorable enough that as I write this review while looking at the table of contents, I actually remember the stories--this only a few days after completing the book. I'm definitely getting older, sure, and more crotchety; but as yet I've no noticable symptoms of Alzheimer's. The one word that comes to mind with regard to most of these stories is "ordinary".
However, about 10 of the stories were worth a read. Of these, the two best were Cory Doctrow's "Visit the Sins", portraying family relationships that developed after an attempt to cure Attention Deficit Disorder goes horribly awry; and Chris Lawson's "Written in Blood" was an engaging look at the border between faith and technology, with prejudice and hope entangling one another.
Robert Reed's "Game of the Century" posited a future in which genetic engineering gives us superhuman athletes, but more importantly explores how they would feel growing up as such. Sarah Zettel's "Kinds of Strangers" follows the psychological breakdown of the crew of a deep-space craft after a devastating equipment failure. Stephen Baxter's bleak "Huddle", about a future molded by genetic engineering and planetary catastrophe was easily the darkest story in the book. Curt Wohleber's "100 Candles" and Chris Beckett's "Valour" were genuinely well written, well conceived stories with interesting characters. Finally, translated from the Japanese, Hiroe Suga's "Freckled Figure" was a beautifully told tale that somehow bound together the spirit of ancient Japanese craftsmanship with the love of anime and technology that drives so much of Japan today.
For the sake of these stories, YEAR'S BEST SF 5 is worth a look. But if you really want great sci-fi, I'd HIGHLY recommend STARFISH by Peter Watts. I've just finished it and have to say it is the best sci-fi books I've read in many many years. I hope that David Hartwell is able to find fiction of that quality for future anthologies.

When I was originally reading this book, I was interested in seeing how the author would speed up their code. He covers a wide variety of topics which is good, but that also hampers the book as none of the topics are covered in depth. He uses lots of small examples and shows how to profile before moving on to optimizing them. Let’s go over each of the chapters so you can get a taste of what the book covers. Full disclosure: I was a technical reviewer of the book for Packt.

Chapter one is all about profiling your code. It covers the differences between statistical and event-based profiling, what profiling is and why it’s important, bottlenecks and memory leaks. It also goes over running time complexity (linear, factorial, quadratic, etc) and profiling best practices.

Then we logically move into chapter two where we learn about some profilers we can use with Python. The two that are covered are cProfile (included with Python) and line_profiler. The author demonstrates various ways to use cProfile to measure your code and also how to use Python’s pstats module, which is used for analyzing the results you receive from cProfile. Then the author moves on to using line_profiler and kernprof to analyze the same (or similar) examples used with cProfile. I think this is one of the best balanced chapters in the book and really quite interesting all by itself.

Chapter three goes into using visual tools to help you understand your profiler’s output. In this chapter, you will learn about KCacheGrind / pyprof2calltree and RunSnakeRun. For the most part, you’ll just learn how to use these tools to figure out what your data means.

In chapter four, we learn about optimizing your code. Topics covered are memoization, list comprehensions, generators, ctypes, loading your own custom C library, and some others tips and tricks. While this chapter is short, it has some good ideas and is worth reading or at least skimming.

Chapter five digs into multithreading and multiprocessing. You’ll learn about the pros and cons of each. You will also learn about the Global Interpreter Lock and how that affects you when you choose one of these techniques.

Chapter six goes into using PyPy and Cython and how they can be useful for additional optimizations to your code. I enjoyed this chapter, although I didn’t feel that PyPy got as much attention as Cython. There also weren’t very many coding examples.

If you’re into number crunching, then chapter seven is for you. It goes over how to use Numba, Parakeet and pandas. Quite frankly, out of the three of libraries, I had only ever heard of pandas. I personally don’t need to do a lot of number crunching in my line of work, but it was interesting to see how each of the libraries worked and get a general idea of what they could be used for.

Finally in chapter eight, the author attempts to put it all together. This chapter probably should have been twice as long as it is so that he could have actually covered everything. But in the end, it covers just barely enough and you do get to see a full example get optimized from beginning to end.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I would recommend this to anyone who needs ideas for optimizing their Python code or just for learning about profiling in general.

Though I’ve programmed in R for some time, I am relatively new to Python. “Mastering Python High Performance” helped me with some Python syntax issues. I found Chapter 4 “Optimize Everything”, which includes coverage on dictionary lookups, list comprehensions & miscellaneous tips / tricks, the most useful. Chapter 5 was also interesting as it helped me understand the pros & cons of multithreading versus multiprocessing. Overall, I found this a helpful & informative text for a Python programmer with some prior experience in the language.

Mastering Python High Performance is a worthwhile buy for python programmers who are looking to take their skills to a new level. It gives you a pretty good explanation of how the code is executed when it is run which can be useful for anyone who wants to have more in depth knowledge of computing. If I had one gripe it would be it seems to rush into the topic a bit too quickly and jumps into algorithm and doesn’t sufficiently go over the topic. Overall, “High Performance Python” is a vast topic and this book does a good enough job getting into the finer points of python coding.

About the Author
Patricia A. Adler (Ph.D., University of California, San Diego) is Professor Emerita of Sociology at the University of Colorado. She has written and taught in the area of deviance, qualitative methods, and the sociology of children. A second edition of her book, WHEELING AND DEALING (Columbia University Press), a study of upper-level drug traffickers, was published in 1993. Peter Adler (Ph.D., University of California, San Diego) is Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Denver. Peter has been honored with the University Lecturer Award and as the Outstanding Scholar/Teacher at the University of Denver, as well as being named by the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction (SSSI) as Mentor of the Year in 2005.

Nice book, interesting topic. Well put together

Fine as far as textbooks go. The articles are varied and interesting. Also short enough to read easily. The print is small, and it's a little heavy. But not too bad.

I will say that I heavily prefer using e-book textbooks. The savings are great, especially since I never sell the old textbooks. I always mean to, but who am I kidding? Also much easier not to juggle a textbook when you are using a laptop. You have to find a way to prop open and have good lighting to read. With the Kindle for PC, it is easy to copy and paste for notes, annotate or highlight. And it includes footnotes for copy/paste. Bonus to work anywhere in the house without dragging a lamp around. So now I know. Should have done that with this but fine.

The book was in excellent condition. However, while I was at work and my husband was at home taking a nap, our dog ate the top, right corner of the first 70 pages of the book. I just wish I didn't have to pay another $155 to replace the book. :(

About the Author

Emmett Dulaney is an Assistant Professor at Anderson University. He has written several certification books on Windows, security, IT project management, and UNIX, and was the co-author of CompTIA A+ Complete Study Guide (Sybex).

Chuck Easttom is CEO and Chief Trainer for CEC-Security, which specializes in IT security training and CISP and Security+ exam preparation. He has over 18 years in the IT industry, 10 years teaching and training, and has authored 15 published books.

Some people get lucky and get the easy questions like the ones in this book

I passed the test. No fault to the authors, but practically nothing out there can prepare you for the SY0-401 test. Some people get lucky and get the easy questions like the ones in this book. Others like me get a test that has around 15 questions that aren't covered by this book, or the Comptia Training software called "Cert Master" ,or any other online resource. The test is so hard that if I had failed I would have no idea what to do because so many questions were not covered in this book nor in any training software or practice questions anywhere and because so many are not covered in the book I can't possibly memorize all the hard questions and then google them after the test.

My advice is this. Memorize every single protocol and every single port number that has anything to do with any protocol in the book. Some protocols and ports on the test were NOT AT ALL covered in this book so I suggest you use lots of online sources as well as this book.

Perfect book for those new to Security

This is an ideal book to prepare you for the fundamental security exam you need to introduce you to this field, the CompTIA Security+ SY0-401.

I'd previously used the last edition as my main source of material when preparing for my own sitting of the exam last Spring, and passed with flying colours thanks to the well laid out chapters, granular and thought out approach - Dulaney really helps you gain a holistic approach to the technologies, methodologies and concepts he covers.

This book, if anything, is an improvement on that. The new material is well covered, and integrated in to the more established content in a logical, well explained manner. The diagrams are clean and functional, the end of chapter questions well worded, and the overall editing to a very high standard.

This book also came in exceptionally handy while preparing for my first security related job interview, which I subsequently obtained, greatly moving forward my career. It sits pride of place on by desk, next to by SSCP, CASP and CISSP books.

As with the previous edition of this book for the SY0-301 exam, I'd recommend this for anyone with an interest in learning about the fundamentals of IT security, both with our without the exam itself on your mind.

Good book, just doesn't prepare you for the exam questions.

I read this book cover to cover, did VERY well on all of the review questions, but failed the exam. I did not fail it by much, but I did nonetheless. The book gets through the material just fine, but don't think that the questions in the book are like the ones in the exam because they aren't even CLOSE to the same. The exam features many "scenario" type questions where you need to pick the BEST answer, so there are multiple right answers, this book does not provide any questions to prepare you for that. Again, the material in the book is good, but to really be successful at the exam with using this book, I feel like you would need to read it 3 or 4 times to memorize every detail of each term/topic.
