Flynn knows what he is talking about
By Cryophysics
Flynn has created a great data source for anyone in this field and a practical overview of several key processes. His treatment of solids and slushes is probably the best in the field and he deals with the entire spectrum of cryo fluids. The thermodynamics is first rate and he even explains some obscure properties of organics in cryo temperatures.

Multinational firms can artificially shift profits from high-tax to low-tax jurisdictions using a variety of techniques, such as shifting debt to high-tax jurisdictions. Since tax on the income of foreign subsidiaries (except for certain passive income) is deferred until repatriated, this income can avoid current U.S. taxes and perhaps do so indefinitely. The taxation of passive income (called Subpart F income) has been reduced, perhaps significantly, through the use of “hybrid entities” that are treated differently in different jurisdictions. The use of hybrid entities was greatly expanded by a new regulation (termed “check-the-box”) introduced in the late 1990s that had unintended consequences for foreign firms. In addition, earnings from income that is taxed can often be shielded by foreign tax credits on other income. On average very little tax is paid on the foreign source income of U.S. firms. Ample evidence of a significant amount of profit shifting exists, but the revenue cost estimates vary from about $10 billion to $60 billion per year. Individuals can evade taxes on passive income, such as interest, dividends, and capital gains, by not reporting income earned abroad. In addition, since interest paid to foreign recipients is not taxed, individuals can also evade taxes on U.S. source income by setting up shell corporations and trusts in foreign haven countries to channel funds. There is no general third party reporting of income as is the case for ordinary passive income earned domestically; the IRS relies on qualified intermediaries (QIs) who certify nationality without revealing the beneficial owners. Estimates of the cost of individual evasion have ranged from $40 billion to $70 billion. Most provisions to address profit shifting by multinational firms would involve changing the tax law: repealing or limiting deferral, limiting the ability of the foreign tax credit to offset income, addressing check-the-box, or even formula apportionment. President Obama’s proposals include a proposal to disallow overall deductions and foreign tax credits for deferred income and restrictions on the use of hybrid entities. Provisions to address individual evasion include increased information reporting and provisions to increase enforcement, such as shifting the burden of proof to the taxpayer, increased penalties, and increased resources. Individual tax evasion is the main target of the HIRE Act, the proposed Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act, and the Senate Finance Committee proposals; some revisions are also included in President Obama’s plan.

I liked this book very much. I have read other books about balancing your bodies ph levels before but this one has a lot of good unrivaled information that I have not even seen in others. With that said, the book has a lot of typing errors that should be corrected however It does not detract from the wonderful information given here. I gave this book five stars because the information provided is useful and priceless. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to maintain good health or trying is to regain their health back.

This book does a good job covering what fruits are alkaline and best for your body and what fruits to avoid that are acidic. Not only does it teach you how to overcome sicknesses you may already have but also what to do to prevent them from happening in the first place. I'd personally like to thank the author Rudy Silva for the shared knowledge and would definitely recommend this book to my friends.

A pleasant surprise

While the literature on probability and random signals is enormous, college classrooms have long been dominated by a few classics. New books attempting to compete in this area haven't seen much success in recent years.
As a college instructor, I find this new addition a really pleasant surprise. The style certainly is a notch above many other texts, yet the more important feature to me is the way theories are presented. While mathematical rigor is not compromised, a clear emphasis on fundamental principles and intuitive thinking has its great appeal, especially to students who have not had much experience with random variables etc. As claimed by the author, it is ``extremely instructor-friendly'' because of its Textgraph format. Indeed, the clever mixture of `viewgraph' with the in depth discussion in the book makes it very appealing for classroom use.
Another feature is the carefully compiled problems including self-test problems that should be well received by motivated students. Reading chapter 5 has also been a quite enjoyable experience as it summarizes succinctly major applications of probability theory before it gets to the more advanced topics on random processes. The accompanied user-friendly software is also a plus --- being able to play with various probability concepts will certainly enhance greatly the students' understanding of the subject matter.

Not recommended for beginners

I am afraid I can't wholly recommend this text for people taking a first look at probabilities, especially if they are studying independently. The major problem is Li's lack of clarity and explanation. He just seems unnecessarily confusing and abstract. He does state essential points right up front, but not enough attempt is made to provide intuitive or common-sense explanations. Examples are mostly derivations of special cases. More useful examples are provided at the end of chapters, but they would be better if integrated with the text. Readers experienced with the subject might appreciate Dr. Li's terseness, but for beginners I would more highly recommend "The Probability Tutoring Book" by Ash.

The book, to an extent, is easy to read. However, for any interested is self-teaching, discard all thoughts of purchasing this book. It is not only outdated, but the professor designed it to teach in the classroom. The professor dislikes people learning with examples, and the examples given skip the steps where it actually applies the information it presents you. It is considerably unfriendly to those who are not attending his lectures.

The lectures include additional information not presented in the book, which is absurd for being a required textbook.

It also avoids the mechanistic reductionism characteristic of recent materialism.

Innovative and Stimulating

William Hasker's The Emergent Self is an excellent book on philosophy of mind. While the majority of philosophers in the field are gravitating towards forms of "physicalism" and "materialism" (even among Christians!), Hasker resists this trend with compelling arguments. This book is worth buying, if for no other reason, than its criticisms of a physicalist view of the mind. To date, I have not seen physicalists begin to answer the type of problems that Hasker brings to a point in this book.

In addition to his devastating criticism of physicalism, Hasker's book is also truly innovative. He develops arguments in detail for a specific type of dualism--emergent dualism--that is significantly different from Cartesian dualists (like Swinburne) and Thomistic dualists (like Stump). Hasker's innovative philosophical work broadens the playing field for dualists, which many will welcome given the failures of physicalism and classical problems with traditional dualist views. Hasker shows that dualism is not a simple theory that fits one mold. Those only familiar with traditional dualisms will find new and significant ideas to engage in this articulate book.

Hasker writes with lucidity, rigor, and wit that makes forging through the rough terrain of analytic philosophy of mind a delight, rather than a task. Those with an interest in physicalism, emergentism, dualism, or any general topic in the philosophy of mind will benefit from the work put into this book.

Excellent overview, conclusion begs the question

As an amateur philosopher, I found this book extremely helpful in getting a handle on the different views and arguments about consciousness. It took a good look at materialism and dualism and explained why they are insufficient theories in both logical and prose form. The writing was very clear and, for the most part, concise.
The author concludes with his own version of dualism which I didn't buy at all. But despite the ending, this book is worth buying for everything else.

The best review of emergent theories of mind ever!

There was no question in my mind that this book deserved 5 stars. It is an important addition to the literature in philosophy of mind. As with many such works in philosophy, Hasker spends the first four fifths of his book examining other theories of mind including eliminitavism, mind-brain identity, and various dualisms of both the substance and property variety. He explores their strengths, what motivates them, and their weaknesses. In doing this, he covers more ground and makes finer distinctions than many other recent entries in the field. He is also graciously fair. He takes pains to point out where and why incomplete or even incoherent theories appear reasonable in part. He examines other theories from their own internal viewpoint, what problems they try to solve, as well as in their relation to one another. He extends this fairness to his own theory offered in the last fifth of the book. He assesses not only its strengths compared to its competitors, but also its weaknesses.

Along the way, Hasker understands that epistemological and phenomenological issues have metaphysical implications and he addresses these in some detail as the need arises. He goes a little off the deep end in his last chapter where he tries to show how each of the competing theories of mind might deal with the possibility of life-after-death. He recognizes that in the end, only theologically based theories (which he does not care to explore) can provide a metaphysical ground for some of the implications present in the qualities of mind. His own theory warrents a belief in the reality of libertarian free will agency (for example) but he admits in the end that any theory beginning with the assumption that the physical is the fundamental ground of everything cannot provide any metaphysical ground for it! To his greater credit he recognizes that reaching for quantum mechanics or information theory to provide that ground goes nowhere. He explores both of these moves commonly seen in the recent literature.

I don't agree with Hasker's every conclusion but the depth and breadth of this exploration of recent work in the philosophy of mind is superbly done. Hasker writes well. His arguments are easy to follow. If you have any interest in this philosophical sub-discipline "The Emergent Self" should be a must read.

great renting experience!

The company that I rented from along with Amazon made renting my first book a breeze. The content within the book; however, is not 100% correct. Some of the answers in the practice problems are printed wrong in the back of the book and there are actually spelling errors within this book. Bad editing.

The condition of the book itself is good but of course for being used it did have pages torn out, but I got some pages from the online book and printed out a couple pages to fill in for the book I used. Hope people do the same as the pages that where torn out where VERY ESSENTIAL to my assignment!!!!!!!!!!!
