Book Lays a Helpful Foundation

Steve Farra's book guides the reader through a concept many might find at first surprising. All of us have presuppositions, and those presuppositions impact our lives and our methods profoundly.

Farra wrote the first draft of his book forty years ago, and has updated it over the years. He writes in an interesting style, and his assertions are well documented. Using primary sources, the author demonstrates how the differing presuppositions Freud and Frankl had led them to view life in profoundly different ways. A secondary theme of the book, then, is the way it subtly challenges readers to consider the impact of their own presuppositions on the conclusions they draw about life and its ultimate purpose.

Readers who want a concise history of Sigmund Freud will find the book helpful, but the book is more than that. Farra's work, through its discussion of Victor Frankl's life, also demonstrates how a life that faces incredible trials (as Frankl did) can rise above its circumstances if that life is built on a solid foundation of truth.

Of particular interest is how the rejection of religious faith by Freud and the embracing of religious faith by Frankl, led otherwise similar men to different priorities of treatment. This e-book would be of interest to anyone wanting to know how Freudian influences permeate modern culture, those desirous of a quick education on the world's two most significant psychotherapists, and those who would like to see that there is a positive, equally well-regarded, alternative to Freud. As a chaplain with combat experience I found the material on Frankl of particular interest and helpful.

This short work is a good general overview of the philosophical underpinnings of the psychotherapeutic views of two of the major leaders of the Viennese School of Psychology. The views of Freud and Frankl are at variance with each other but by comparing and contrasting these two distinct worldviews, an open minded reader can learn a great deal of the practical application of these methodologies within their own unique practice.

About the Author

Markad V. Kamath, Ph.D. is a professor in the department of Medicine, with associate memberships in the Computing and Software Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He received a B.Eng. from Karnataka Regional Engineering College (now the National Institute of Technology), India, a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras), and a Ph.D. in medical sciences from McMaster University. He is the editor of the journals Critical Reviews in Biomedical Engineering and Critical Reviews in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine and the founding editor of Visualization, Image Processing and Computation in Biomedicine. He is a registered professional engineer in the province of Ontario, Canada.

Mari A. Watanabe, M.D., Ph.D., is currently an assistant professor in the cardiology department at St. Louis University. She received her M.D. from Nippon Medical School in Tokyo and Ph.D. in physiology and applied mathematics from Cornell University. She has conducted research in cardiology, mathematics and physics at various institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, University of Utah, and Glasgow University in Scotland. She has received research grants from the American Heart Association, National Institute of Health and British Heart Foundation. She publishes papers in both clinical and basic science journals.

Adrian R.M. Upton, M.D., FRCP(C), FRCP(E), FRCP(G), is a professor of medicine at McMaster University. Dr. Upton qualified as a physician in the United Kingdom and has held a number of senior positions, including the director of the neurology department and director of the Diagnostic Neurophysiology Laboratory at Chedoke-McMaster hospitals, Canada. He has published over 400 papers in areas such as autonomic stimulation, evoked potentials, electroencephalography and electromyography, among others. This book should be a movie!

So real--couldn't put it down. Was a bit different than anything else Ford has written, though. She continues to amaze and surprise me. Fabulous writer, very good read! So good, in fact, I could help thinking that it should be made into a movie!

Life Ain't Easy

CHOKE is an earthy new novel by author Darnella Ford. The story is written in the first person and told through its main character, Vanessa. She is a broke, separated from her cheating husband, overweight, overworked, single mother who would probably summarize her life as a series of disappointments, but she has one last hope. Her daughter Kennedy is the one bright light in what would otherwise be considered a dim existence. Kennedy is a gifted pianist with hopes of attending Milligan School, a prestigious, albeit expensive, private music school. More than anything, Vanessa wants her daughter to pursue this dream, not only because of its potential to ensure a better life for her and her daughter, but also because it is deeply linked to her own childhood aspiration of becoming a musician. There is no limit to what she will do to make sure that her daughter can attend Milligan; or is there?

Vanessa's story is moving, realistic, and poignant. Her candid, acerbic voice, lends authenticity to her experiences and at times, adds an element of dark humor. The secondary characters added spice to the plot, but on deeper reflection, their stories taught important lessons not only to Vanessa, but to the reader as well. Darnella Ford's writing immediately draws you into the story and connects the reader to the characters. I found myself empathizing with Vanessa, relating to some of her insecurities, and deeply invested in the outcome of the book. The plot is gritty and deals with tough real-life situations. Everyone at some point in there lives has felt choked by the things life throws at them: Even though readers may not necessarily relate to the specific storylines, most will find it easy to relate to the underlying emotional and moral issues addressed in CHOKE because those are universal.

A Tribute To Single Women Everywhere

Vanessa Claville is in a place that she doesn't want to be. She going through a divorce, just lost her housekeeping job, and living in low income housing in the middle of El Mirage, AZ. The only good thing in Vanessa's life is her musically gifted 12-year-old daughter Kennedy. Kennedy is auditioning for an acclaimed music academy that Vanessa can't afford. Time is running out because Vanessa has to come up with the tuition money for the academy or let her daughter's dreams become a distant memory. She realizes that she will need to sacrifice her own dreams for her daughter's. With the help of her neighbors Anese and Yolie, Vanessa is reluctantly introduced into a way to make the money that she needs. But is she willing to sacrifice her morals and dignity for this new profession?

Choke is an enthralling novel by Darnella Ford. Ford captured the realness of a single mother's journey and the sacrifices she has to make for her child. I like the interesting location of where this novel took place, and the interesting mix of characters. I really felt the inner conflict of Vanessa as she was trying to come up with the tuition money. There is also a unique twist toward the end of the book that will leave readers pleasantly surprised. Choke is widely entertaining, inspirational, and humorous. Darnella Ford is truly a gifted author.

About the Author
Stefanos Zenios is the Charles A. Holloway Professor at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University. His pioneering work on maximizing the benefits of medical technology to patients when resources are limited has influenced policies in the US and Europe. He has quantified the ethical implications of technology allocation choices on patients and society as featured in the Financial Times and Times.com. At Stanford University, he was the first to introduce courses on the interface between medicine, engineering, and management in the MBA curriculum. Dr Zenios advises medical device and biopharmaceutical companies on health economics and outcomes studies for marketing and reimbursement strategies. He is also a co-founder of Culmini Inc., a company funded by the National Institutes of Health to develop web-tools that help patients and families with difficult choices.

Josh Makower is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of ExploraMed, a medical device incubator. He is also a Venture Partner with New Enterprise Associates, a Consulting Associate Professor at Stanford University Medical School, and a co-founder of Stanford's Biodesign Innovation Program. Dr Makower has founded several medical device businesses including Moximed, Vibrynt, NeoTract, Acclarent, TransVascular and EndoMatrix. Up until 1995, he was founder and Manager of Pfizer's Strategic Innovation Group. He holds over 50 patents in various fields of medicine and surgery, an MBA from Columbia University, an M.D. from NYU, and an S.B. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT.

Paul Yock is the Director of the Stanford Biodesign Program and the founding Co-Chair of the Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University. He is known internationally for his work in inventing, developing, and testing new medical devices, including the Rapid Exchange(TM) balloon angioplasty and stenting system, which is now the principal system in use worldwide. He also authored the fundamental patents for mechanical intravascular ultrasound imaging and founded Cardiovascular Imaging Systems. In addition, he invented a Doppler-guided access system known as the Smart Needle(TM) and PD-Access(TM). Dr Yock holds 55 US patents and has authored over 300 papers, mainly in the area of catheter-based interventions and technologies. He has been elected to membership in the National Academy of Engineering and has received several prestigious awards, including the American College of Cardiology Distinguished Scientist Award.

Todd J. Brinton is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine (Cardiovascular) and Bioengineering (by courtesy) at Stanford University. He is an interventional cardiologist at Stanford University Medical Center and investigator in interventional-based therapies for coronary disease and heart failure. He is also the Fellowship Director for the Biodesign Program, and Co-Director of the graduate class in Biodesign Innovation at Stanford University. Dr Brinton completed his medicine, cardiology, and interventional training at Stanford University. He holds an M.D. from the Chicago Medical School and a B.S. in bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego. He is co-founder of BioParadox, Inc., a venture-backed medical device company and serves on the advisory board for a number of early-stage medical device companies. Prior to medical school he was the Clinical Research Director for Pulse Metric, Inc., a medical device start-up company.

Uday N. Kumar is the founder and Chief Medical Officer of iRhythm Technologies, Inc., a venture-backed medical device company focused on developing new devices and systems for the detection of cardiac rhythm disorders. He is also the Associate Director, Curriculum of Stanford-India Biodesign and a Lecturer in Bioengineering, and has served as an Adjunct Clinical Instructor of Cardiovascular Medicine, all at Stanford University. In these capacities, he mentors, advises, and teaches students and fellows about the biodesign process. Dr Kumar completed a Biodesign Innovation fellowship at Stanford, cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology fellowships at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), an internal medicine residency at Columbia University, and his medical and undergraduate education at Harvard University. He was also Chief Medical Officer and Vice-President of Biomedical Modeling Inc., a medical start-up company.

Lyn Denend is a Research Associate at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, where she has authored numerous case studies for use in graduate-level and executive education programs in areas such as strategic management, international business, supply chain management, healthcare, and biodesign innovation. Previously, Ms Denend was a Senior Manager in Cap Gemini Ernst & Young's management consulting practice and Vice President of Operations for a start-up providing human resource services. She has an MBA from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and a BA in Communications from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Thomas M. Krummel is Emile Holman Professor and Chair in the Department of Surgery, and Co-Director of the Stanford Biodesign Program, at Stanford University. He has been a pioneer and consistent innovator throughout his career, and has served in leadership positions in many of the important surgical societies including the American College of Surgeons, the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the American Surgical, the American Board of surgery, the American Board of Pediatric Surgery, and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Over the last 14 years, Dr. Krummel has pioneered the application of technology to simulation-based surgical training and surgical robotics. For his work in this area, and developing a collaborative simulation-based surgical training system, he has received two Smithsonian Information Technology innovation Awards.

Comprehensive and real-life experience-based

It's very comprehensive and detailed in a well-structured presentation of the process of introducing a biomedical product or process into the market place. It's solidly based on the real-life experience of one of the authors, Josh Makower, a Successful serial entrepreneur. It also includes examples from the classroom at Stanford, where this book is used as the textbook for the senior design class. Important concepts are often illustrated with real cases from the field. Plenty of references help the readers dig deeper. It's not suitable for casual reading or for someone who just wants to get a quicky on selling an invention, but is excellent for entrepreneurs who are considering getting into the field and senior students who are training for an entrepreneurial career.

A little too formulaic for many of the processes, and then it will completely brush over some complex processes that probably need more information. All together, the best available textbook on how to go from need identification all the way to business concept and beyond. I'd highly recommend pairing this with The Startup Owners Manual and Business Model Generation. Both books are the go-to textbooks for startup generation at the moment.

Primer for Medical Device Design, Experimentation & Commercialization

This is the best printed resource for helping physicians and entrepreneurs invent, prove & commercialize new medical technologies. Creating medical innovations which make it all the way through clinical proof and as successful products are the greatest contributions we can have beyond our own hands. However, the process is complex and products are often commercial failures even when they are effective. This book helps to explain why.

Kudos to the authors for compiling practical advice across the entire lifecycle, from validating the clinical need, to early prototyping, to navigating clinical & regulatory roadmaps. It will be a standard text for medical school and biomedical engineering programs focused on innovation.
