Passed on first try

I've been in IT for about 10 years and decided that the ITIL exam was the next logical next step in my career. A lot of people have said the material is easy and you don't need much time to study for it, however, I wanted to take my time with this since I wanted to really learn the material and not just cram to pass a test. I passed the test on my first try about a month after starting the book. I took the pre-assessment which I failed miserably and then read every chapter highlighting important points and completing the end of chapter questions at the end of each chapter. I then reviewed the highlighted material and re-read all the exam essential information at the end of each chapter. I then took the two practice tests at the end of the book and passed the test with a 93% (got three questions wrong). Below are the pros and cons of the book.

Pros:

It prepares you for what is going to be on the exam. This book is all you need to pass the test.

It easy to read with minimal typos and does a good job of covering the material that will be on the test.

The practice exams at the end of the book are very accurate on what the test is going to be like. They are gold.

Cons:

There aren't enough examples of the concepts they cover and the ones that are there are not very good.

There aren't enough visuals to reinforce the examples being explained.

The end of the chapter questions are not a good representation on what the test questions will be like. If you don't take several practice exams before the real test you will fail.

Solid study material

I was out of work for a little over 6 months earlier this year and kept seeing "ITIL" pop up as a requirement for jobs I was looking at. I already have several technical certifications and decided to try and acquire this one as well so I picked up this book. After studying for about 2 weeks I took the test and passed with an 89%. If you're looking for a solid study guide this book is a great option. The material is presented in a straightforward manner and the chapters are kept concise enough to keep your attention from lapsing. For those looking to get into an entry level IT/help desk job I'd definitely recommend this book and going for the ITIL Foundation cert (at $150 it's less expensive than most Comptia and MS exams) as more and more companies are starting to adopt these standards.

More useful as an extra guide

Disclaimer: I passed my ITIL Foundation Exam with a 92%. However, this book was only a small part of the reason why.

I'm mildly disappointed with the book. Far too much detail gets spent on explaining the concepts beyond what is necessary for the Foundation level and a lot of subjects were introduced that aren't even needed until higher levels. The real world examples, while interesting, don't really add that much benefit to studying. The online material was helpful for review, although there was one question where the answers were for another question. The lack of a glossary at the back was a strange omission; you can get a copy of it online, why not include it in the physical book as well?

All in all, it's average as a study guide but may come in handy if you choose to pursue a higher level of ITIL certification. If you use it as your only guide, you may be struggling through the exam.

An outstanding analysis of issues grappling an emerging economy

This book is a must read for anybody wishing to dig deeper into India's recent impressive economic performance and undeniable presence in the world. It offers an outstanding analysis of post independent India's growth experience in the form of four distinct phases--relating it meticulously to the content and pace of economic reforms--and convincingly addresses key issues such as why did growth stall in post independent India, and why it took off again, how the process was affected by the country's complex political process, and where are the promises and challenges for the future. It also provides a very thorough account of the role of government in the macro and structural reform process. Finally, it raises several timely questions in light of the recent economic and financial strains confronting the world economy: is the government's fiscal policy sustainable or would it result in runaway inflation and/or economic crises? How urgent is the need for fiscal consolidation? What is the state of the financial system and does it need to be fixed? What are the risks of a balance of payments crisis--akin to that experienced in the early 1990s?

Notwithstanding its very comprehensive analysis, the book reaches out to a wide spectrum of readers--its careful data analysis with a rich dose of charts and tables will definitely appeal the thorough academician who expects statements to be backed by adequate statistics; at the same time, the issues are close to the heart of any pragmatic policymaker, not just in India but in other emerging market economy. Comprehensive Study

This book is a comprehensive and in-depth study of the Indian Economy, its journey since India's independence in 1947 till 2006.

There is no doubt that India is now a rapidly growing economy, even under challenging and grim global economic scenario, and is considered to a be strong contender of the global economic pie in the twenty first century.

It is often said that India got independence twice - Political freedom in 1947 from the British Raj and Economic Freedom in 1991 from "License Raj".

Prof Panagaria documents and analyses the economic policy, principles, thought, directions, outcomes and his own views during the six decades of India's economic evolution.

The "Four Phases" and growth rates: 1. Take off under a liberal regime (1951-65 @ 4.1%) 2. Socialism strikes with a vengeance (1965-81 @ 3.2 %) 3. Liberalization under Stealth (1981-88 @ 4.8 %) 4. Triumph of liberalization (1988-2006 at 6.3 %), is the most logical segregation of the six decades of very distinct policy regimes of the times.

One chapter devoted to each of the above phases helps us understand the forces and factors that dictated the political and policy directions, based on domestic and international developments and compulsions.

Till the late 1980's the fundamental thought in Indian economic policy was based on a bias towards establishing a "socialistic" pattern of society, where the government played the predominant role in determining the allocation of "scarce" recourses. The public sector played a key role in most industries, and the Industrial Licensing policy coupled with powerful laws like Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Polices Act, Foreign Exchange Regulations Act, not only isolated India in global trade and investments from the rest of the world but also converted the whole economy into an autarky that crippled its soul.

In contrast, South Korea with a comparable per capita GDP as India's in 1960's adopted outward oriented and market friendly policies that propelled its economic growth and prosperity. The chapter "A tale of two countries" is an excellent read.

Since 1991, enabled by the massive liberalization of the economy that unleashed market forces and attracted foreign investments and technology, India's outward orientation has made a quantum jump to over 43 % as compared to just 8 % in the late 70's.

Despite excellent growth rates, especially in the last decade, India faces the twin challenges of equitable growth and poverty alleviation.

Prof Panagaria has devoted a chapter each to "Declining Poverty" and "Inequality" to discuss the two key topics that are often at the top on the manifestos of most political parties, at least during election campaigns.

Prof Panagaria advocates direct transfer of funds to people below the poverty line (BPL) instead of resorting to subsidies that result in corruption and leakage. Subsidies are not only regressive, but are distortionary argues the author. This policy prescription cuts across all sectors. Given the lack of connectivity and poor reach of the banking system in remote areas, I personally doubt the feasibility of such transfers.

A chapter each to discuss key sectors - Finance, Agriculture, Industry, Education, Health care, Manufacturing, Tax Reform. Telecom and Electricity to name some, the depth of coverage, references, analysis and concluding remarks are splendid.

An excellent reference material, I would recommend this as essential reading to students, business managers, bureaucrats and politicians who will shape the economic destiny and prosperity of the world's largest democracy in the Twenty First Century.

David Ussishkin was born in Jerusalem and completed his studies at the Hebrew University. Until his retirement he taught archaeology and ancient art at Tel Aviv University. This book is the best archaeological entertainment I can imagine for a lay person! Writing is non-technical, the story of excavation is fascinating, and I can only thank Ussishkin for thinking of us regular folk.

Scanned Kindle edition of Euclid's Elements of Geometry

Euclid's Elements of Geometry by H M Taylor, Kindle edition: This is a great book of historical value. The original printed version was scanned but not corrected for scanning errors. Every page is full of spelling mistakes, broken words, and mislabeled algebraic symbols. Many times one cannot even guess what the correct word is. Uniformly C in the diagram is misprinted as G in the text. For example, BAC in the diagram almost always becomes BAG in the text and there are innumerable errors like that throughout. It is so pathetic, I wonder why any responsible Kindle Editor would publish this version. Granted it is only $0.99, but don't you Kindle Editors and Publishers have any self respect? I implore Amazon to withdraw this Kindle version, correct for scanning errors and republish an edition that is worthy of this great book .

Beautiful direct access to Euclid, with diagrams

I am reviewing the Lulu Books bilingual Greek/English edition with a new translation by Richard Fitzpatrick, Euclid's Elements of Geometry. Unfortunately the Amazon system is merging reviews of it with another book by the same title: the quite different LLC Books automated scan of an older version Euclids Elements of Geometry.

LLC says right up front that they publish low cost completely unedited automated scans of old books, and their scanning process deletes diagrams and formatting such as footnotes, and misreads some text. Sometimes it garbles entire lines of print.

The Fitzpatrick edition by LuluBooks is a handsome production with the Heiberg Greek text in a parallel column to Fitzpatrick's new translation, with the same diagrams as Heiberg. It is astonishing but true that Heiberg is out of print, apart from this new edition. I had photocopied it entire from my university library but am glad to have this more manageable version. Fitzpatrick's translation is agreeably close to the Greek.

If you want the Greek text, on paper, get this book.

Even if you do not read Greek you should consider this edition. The real choice for readers who want Euclid with just minor explanatory notes is between this and the Heath translation Euclid's Elements without commentary. I have not seen the latter, but I can say this one is a nice edition. For commentary in English certainly get Heath's excellent The Thirteen Books of the Elements, Vol. 1: Books 1-2 with the two further volumes. And if you read French, consider the recent Vitrac 4 volume commented translation, with into by Caveing, which draws on a century of scholarship since Heath.

You can use this edition to read Euclid with just a minimum of explanatory notes.

Needs a Read-Through

This edition of the book was not really readable. As of my download a few weeks ago, it was clearly machine-transcribed, and no one had read through it to make sure it made sense. Words are broken up incorrectly, and letters are replaced by random symbols.

Save your time and try another version.

Ok, but there are many better books on the subject

As a Statistics teacher, I jump when I see that a new book on this subject has come out. The study of how numbers are understood and misunderstood by the public can be very fascinating indeed. Unfortunately, this book ranks slightly below average in a crowded field. Here's why:

1) The book doesn't offer a whole lot of innovative thinking on the subject. Some examples and phraseology were new, and I especially enjoyed the chapter called "The Whole Elephant" (on the foolishness of quantitative goal setting by heads of companies), but much has been rehashed in other books in some form or another.
2) I wasn't entertained. The book lacked humor, and while not what I would outright call dry, it didn't exactly come alive either.
3) Most examples were from studies related to Great Britain. This may or may not bother some people.

On the flip side, it is a very quick read, with independent chapters that can be read in 10-15 minute bites. Not a bad bathroom book, I suppose.

Better books on the subject, or related subjects: The Drunkard's Walk, Innumeracy, Damned Lies and Statistics, 200% of Nothing, Predictably Irrational, Chances Are

Commonsense and Numbers

There are several books in publication today that strive to guide the general reader through mazes of number-based information; their main purpose is to impart to the general public the ability to ask the right questions and make sense of the information being presented. Some of these books are quite enjoyable while others can be a bit dry. I would place this one in the former category. Having said that, it should be pointed out that the specific topics that are discussed vary greatly throughout the book; as a result, a given reader may find some chapters much more interesting than others. This was certainly true in my case; for example, I found the chapter on risk to be particularly fascinating. The writing style is clear, friendly, authoritative, accessible and engaging. While math/statistics buffs may be the ones to be most attracted to this book, it should be noted that it can be enjoyed by everyone, i.e., the authors' target audience.

This book is fantastic; Michael Blastland and Andrew Dilnot have really captured the essence of what Numbers are all about. Here are three of my favorite quotes from the book:

"Uncertainty is a fact of life. Numbers, often being precise, are sometimes used as if they overcame it. A vital principle to establish is that many numbers will be uncertain, and we should not hold that against them. Even 90 percent accuracy might imply more uncertainty than you would expect. The human lesson here is that since life is not certain, and since we know this from experience, we should not expect numbers to be any different. They can clarify uncertainty, if used carefully, but they cannot beat it."

"Being fallible does not make numbers useless, and the fact that most of the positives are false positives does not mean the test is no good. It has at least narrowed the odds, even if with nothing like 90 percent certainty. Those who are positive are still unlikely to have breast cancer, but they are a little more likely than before they were tested. Those who are negative are now even less likely to have it than before they were tested. So it is not that uncertainty means absolute ignorance, nor that the numbers offer certainty, rather that they can narrow the scope of our ignorance."

"We accuse statisticians of being overly reductive and turning the world into numbers, but statisticians know well enough how approximate and fallible their numbers are. It is the rest of us who perform the worst reductionism whenever we pretend the numbers give us excessive certainty. Any journalist who acts as if the range of uncertainty does not matter, and reports only one number in place of a spread of doubt, conspires in a foolish delusion for which no self-respecting statistician would ever fall."

I hope these quotes connote a general flavor of the skepticism that Blastland and Dilnot are conveying. I found the book terrific and think everyone should read it. I would also recommend reading the books On Being Certain: Believing You Are Right Even When You're Not and Your Brain Is (Almost) Perfect: How We Make Decisions. They fall within this same general category and are equally as good.
