The BEST I've Read Yet!

I purchased 3 books on this subject that were highly recommended by the people that purchased them. Although all the books were great, this book stood out far from the rest. I have 4 kids that range from age 7 to 14. I was reading this book for the first time to my 2 youngest (7 & 10) when the 2 older kids (12 & 14) came into the room as I continued to read. The 2 older kids were actively participating in discussing the contents of the book just as much as the younger ones. We ended up reading it through a second time with all the kids & discussing what they learned. What I'm trying to say is even though at first this book seemed like it was going to pertain to much younger children, it actually didn't. The author made it understandable for the younger ones, but also covered situations the older ones had never thought of. The author also left several areas "open for parental discussion" at the end of sections where parents can elaborate more if they feel they needed to. For ex: some families use the words "private parts", "bathing suit area" or "boy parts & girl parts" instead of the proper names. Instead of explaining these proper names, the author writes something like "..your private parts are the areas of your body that are covered by your bathing suit. These "private areas" have names that you can discuss with your parent. You may want to discuss this right now.." So the author covers all the bases for those parents who would rather use their own "pet names" for genitals without offending anybody (as ALWAYS, there will be people offended by using "penis and vagina" with their children, as well as the reverse using "pee-pee" instead of the correct names for genitals). This was very SMART on the author's part. She left these areas open for further discussion if it was a more sensitive topic. She also explained about "red flags" in how people act and what they say, and how to spot a "red flag". She also explained the importance of TELLING no matter what. One of the most important topics she discussed (that many books overlook or don't emphasize ENOUGH) is that the people that can do these things can be someone you love a lot like a close relative, neighbor, friend, friend's parent or relative, etc. Someone doesn't have to look or be mean or be a STRANGER. As a matter of fact, I don't think the word Stranger was used, which is also SMART because that paints a bad picture to children that only bad-looking people or people they don't know will do these things. I know this is probably wordy & overwritten, but I've read LOTS of books and this is the ONLY ONE that had everything all laid out the way it should be.

I ordered this along with "My Amazing Body" to continue the discussion about appropriate touches, what to do if someone touches you, etc especially with my oldest heading off to all day kindergarten in the fall I wanted to be sure she really grasped the concept and what to do if an uncomfortable situation were to arise.

Although my girls have yet to get passed the first page (at 3 & 5 we often pick up a book 5+ times before they are interested enough to finish it) I have skimmed through and found it to be exactly what I expected when I placed my order. The pages are a bit busy with information in various places but I will likely skip the side notes the first read-through because I know my girls' attention span can't handle that yet.

Great first board book.

This is one book of a series including Family, Working, Playing, and Dressing. All feature a toddler as he (she?) adventures forth and discovers new things. In this episode the tyke befriends different animals including a dog, a cat, and a hen. Friends is my favorite in the series because the animals are drawn so comically. For example, you can see that the dog is just tolerating the child's attention (just like my golden retriever looks when the neighborhood toddlers come for a visit). These books introduced my sons to bedtime story reading seventeen years ago. The set makes a wonderful baby present - something children can enjoy from about 6 months to 2 and 1/2 years.

A simple book that is simply wonderful!

A cute baby and his furry friends teach names of animals. This book is so simple, young babies can enjoy it, and older toddlers can make up stories about the illustrations. It has been one of our baby's favorite's since he was 8 months old. He's 16 months now, and still comes back to it.

A very, very good book on C programming

If you want to get a deep and practical understanding of how to become a good C programmer,
and if you want to learn how to write good looking, readable, and efficient code in C, this is the book for you!
You will accomplish this in just about 260 pages.
With this book, i do recommend you to have some prior programming experience of C to be able to digest it.
But this is a very, very good book on C programming.

If you're looking for a concise and throughout book in C programming. Don't look further!
I wouldn't recommend it for beginners though (as the title says it's for advanced programmers)! If you're beginner I'd recommend to start with C in 21 days from Sams publishing or similar book.

About the Author
Michael Day completed his doctorate degree at Stanford University and has taught middle and high-school art in California. A widely published author and researcher, Dr. Day is a recipient of the Manuel Barkan Award for published research from NAEA. He has served on national panels, editorial boards for national scholarly publications, and art museum boards. He was invited to the former Soviet Union in a scholarly exchange sponsored by the International Research and Exchanges Board, and in 1998 he was one of five scholars invited to Beijing in a delegation sponsored by the Getty Education Institute and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. Dr. Day served as President of the NAEA from 1997 to 1999.

Al Hurwitz has taught at the elementary and secondary levels in Miami-Dade County, Florida. He was the Director of Visual and Performing Arts for Newton, Massachusetts schools and taught art education at Harvard University Graduate School of Education Ohio State University, Teacher's College, Columbia University, Brandeis University, and the Massachusetts College of Art. He has written, co-authored, or edited 12 books on art education and served on the United States Society for Education through Art (USSEA). He has also served on the planning committee of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

I love it! It is a wonderful addition to my class and is full of great examples from history of artists. It is a book I will keep and use for a long time, long after my Class is over!

Nice book but priced too high.

I've found much more helpful books at a much cheaper price. $184, too much. It's very informative, but better off spending the cash on multiple resources.

25 Building Blocks to Create a Conscientious Organization begins with the idea of a conscientious leader as the cornerstone of building a business that serves people who want to become customers. Yes, people want to become customers because the business is authentic, fair, and delivers products and services that build a better life.

Moving to a better life is the true path delivered through the 25 building blocks. Stepping into each building block, I discovered the power of authenticity, simplicity, community, and not straying from the path I set for my business.

Most of the chapters address leadership, the pitfalls and lessons that come through each move we make building a business. A few other chapters deal specifically with customers and employees. In each case, the chapters probe and teach how to communicate authentically, how to set a path for conscientious operation and bring a positive effect in all activities.

From the second chapter, Do You Measure Up to Being a “Cause Drive” Organization? I recognized areas of improvement for my business whether or not it becomes a Benefit Company or goes through the highest step of becoming a certified B Corp. These improvements will appeal to Gen X and Millennials, whether they are customers, employees, or partners, making my business more valuable to each of them.

Sure, I give back, volunteering at community events and spending summer weekends as a volunteer backcountry ranger working with the public on wilderness trails in the Mt Hood National Forest. But I never considered incorporating these activities as part of the business, as a cause that drives purchase, employment, and client decisions.

Am I ready to move to become a Benefit Company or push to that B Corp level? No, at least not yet, but these 25 building blocks set a path I can follow to develop further whether my business qualifies or not. I will benefit from more business and from making the world a little bit better through my awareness. My customers will both benefit from a more honest and authentic relationship.

Good book, Better online access

I use this textbook to teach the online sections of my oral communication class. While the textbook itself is a bit dry, the online resources that come along with it in McGraw-Hill Connect are great! I personally prefer the Kindle version of this textbook.

Terrible book

I can sum up this book with the following excerpt. This is the introduction to a section on nonverbal communication chapter:
":IN the CBS comedy series The big Bang Theory, Sheldon Cooper is a theoretical physicist at Caltech who shares an apartment with his friend and colleague, Leonard Hofstadter. Despite having two doctoral degrees and being at the top of his professional field, Cooper is inept in most social situations. He does not understand many social conventions such as the rules of politeness, and has little ability to interpret other people's emotions... In all, Cooper is not a particularly skilled nonverbal communicator." It then goes on to say Sheldon should read this book, and goes into nonverbal communication. Sheldon is never heard from again.

Am I the only one that doesn't see what the HELL the above has to do with nonverbal communication??? This basically sums up the book in a nutshell. The book is loaded with pop culture references, from Kanye to Tebow to Family Guy. I think they are designed to keep young college students interested in the material by presenting things that are relevant to them. The problem is the book does nothing with the references. It merely throws them out there and yells "Hey I'm cool and hip I know what you kids are all about these days with your dubitystep and your rap videos" but then does absolutely nothing to link this to any of the subject matter. It's the textbook equivalent of a teacher walking into class and saying "Yo Yo kids Jay Z is Dope right! But not as dope as quadratic equations YEAH BOY!!" *cross arms turns cap around*,

Look I dont fault it for doing this, or even doing this so transparently, but for the love of god use the references in a way that makes sense. Where are the examples of sheldon being a poor nonverbal communicator. where are the screencaps of Penny looking visibly disgusted by Sheldon and Sheldon being completely oblivious to her facial expressions.

If youre going to use a gimmick to lure readers, follow through. I think maybe you arrogantly assumed that the target audience for this is so stupid they won't notice references hanging in the air completely unrelated to anything the book. But believe it or not college students are a smart bunch and many of us see through your lazy writing.

A - I love science fiction and space opera. I can never read enough futuristic war novels about galactic empires! I always write books that I would read myself. When people ask me about other author's novels, I tell them to try the books I love. Books like C J Cherryh's Chanur series. I absolutely devoured them. Did you know my aliens, the Shan, were inspired by Chanur? I love the idea of cat-like aliens. My space battles are David Weber's fault. I could never get enough of Honor Harrington. And lastly, I couldn't possibly ignore his collaborations with John Ringo. John’s Empire of Man series is EPIC!

Q - What order should I read the books in?
A - Although each book in the series "could" be read as a standalone book, I don't recommend it. Each one is intricately woven into the overall story arc and linked to the plots of the previous novels. I'd suggest the following sequence:

A very entertaining read, but the story does not have a strong ending (You have to buy more books in other words)

This was a decent read. The characters were well developed and the story line was smooth, interesting and energetic. The 3 books together is a must. Any 1 of the books would have been a waste. Together they were 1 book barely. Even here the author feels the need to leave dangling loose ends to try to entice you to buy the next book. It always leaves me feeling unfinished. A book should have a beginning, middle, end. There can be other books with the same settings and/or characters. Just finish the story you are telling, then tell the next. The current Sci-Fi trend of making every story a continuous soap opera that never has an ending is really getting old. I am tired of authors trying to get me to buy many books for what should have been 1.

Hard to get into and stay with....

I wanted to really like this series. However, the best I can do is say it's ok. I really struggled with the constant, jarring POV shifts. As soon as I'd get into a scene and invest some energy into getting into a character, the story would be off to something completely different with no real continuity. TBH, I found it somewhat exhausting to read at points. There is also an extraordinary amount of wasted words. Entire sections, while certainly showing great imagination and adding color to the 'universe', do nothing to advance the story and end up breaking it up more than helping. So, while liking the core of the story and a lot of where the author tried to go, I personally couldn't manage very well how it was all put together.

Got this set to read books 2 and 3 (cheaper than buying them separately) as I had already read book 1. An interesting concept and really held my attention. Like the author and look forward to more volumes.
