Love, love, love this book! For a newbie author I was truly surprised and engrossed in the story and the characters right from the very first page. This book is definitely dark humor with biblically significant references to enhance the plot and the characters.

They are called the Unholy 5… obsessed with all things of the occult, dabbling with the forces of evil, of which they know very little.
Thirty years ago five teen-aged boys disappeared. Today, two more boys have gone missing. Private Investigator Scarlet St. James, who also moonlights on occasion for the local police, is called in to investigate these latest disappearances.

What you find in this book …. Demons & devils, Ancient languages, witches & spells, Fire and brimstone, evil ceremonies & voodoo, and dark nights in cemeteries, with bodies both dead and alive.

Scarlet comes from a line of seers and this case will be the defining case of her life. It’s going to take all her faith, all her beliefs, and unique talents to uncover dark secrets that have been buried for decades, if not centuries.

I have a confession to make. This is definitely not my preferred genre. I like things much tamer, like serial killers, mass murderers, psychopaths and sociopaths with no redeeming qualities. This book gave me chills up and down my spine and I was sorely tempted to leave the lights on when I went to bed last night.

This morning, in the light of day, I wondered what the author’s mind was like, to come up with all these scenarios in her book …. Written as though this was a true crime novel. AHA! … being the budding detective that I am, I did a little research. Maria Mayer spent 11 years as a funeral director as well as assisting in autopsies. Fertile soil for the imagination! And she has used it perfectly!

I gave it 5 stars because it scared me to death!

Different from other guide books

We took the Rough Guide, The Eyewitness Guide, and the Rick Steves guide on our recent trip to Portugal. Rick Steves gives you a different perspective from the other books, one worth having.

Some of the differences:
1. He only includes the places and sights that he thinks are worth your time, so if you have a short trip, or you don't want to do a lot of research on the best sights, this is a great book.
2. Although he does recommend restaurants, he also gives more general info on finding good food, such as a street or area where there are a number of good restaurants. We found that restaurants that were mentioned by name in the guidebooks were often overrun with tourists, but those we found with Steves' tips were not.
3. Steves uses hand-drawn maps for his walking tours and guided tours of sights that are simplified to remove extraneous detail, making them easier to follow.

On the other hand, we made a day trip to a wonderful town that was not mentioned in Steves' book. So it's always good to take more than one guidebook.

Good at what it does

Yes, as the prior review mentions, the road info may not be accurate... but there's a lot more to this book. I live in Lisbon and recommend it to all our visitors as it has excellent info on making your way through Sintra, Bel�m, Tavira, etc. If you're a first-time visitor looking for insider-type tips on the "highlights" of Portugal, this book is worth considering. (It is limited to a few key Portuguese cities/sites, so don't expect an overview of everything in this beautiful country.)

Only covers high traffic areas

I always like Rick's books because they provide information for a more local experience. Unfortunately, this book only covers the high tourist traffic areas of Portugal. There is NOTHING north or east of Porto, the area I will be visiting, except for a cursory mention of the Douro River. I ended up ordering another book that covers the area I am heading to. I think this one will probably be mailed back, not sure it's worth the effort, but it definitely will not be adding weight to my pack this trip.

The "streamline baby" in Tom Wolfe's 1965 debut book is a hot rod, but the car's candy colors and wild lines can't match the prose style Wolfe devised to describe them. The title essay--Wolfe's first magazine article--launched the New Journalism, partly because its original title was "There Goes (Varoom! Varoom!) That Kandy-Kolored (Thphhhhhh!) Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby (Rahghhh!) Around the Bend (Brummmmmmmmmmmmmmm)..." His voice was more shocking than any subculture he uncovered. Until Wolfe (Ph.D., Yale), nobody struck gold by applying Ph.D.-speak to lowbrow subjects. Kurt Vonnegut famously called this an "excellent book by a genius who will do anything to get attention."

Now that everybody does what Wolfe did, his early essays smack less of genius. But attention must be paid to this pioneering peek into King Pop's tomb. The most startling thing is how soberly sensible most of the prose now appears, except for the title of the first essay, "Las Vegas (What?) Las Vegas (Can't Hear You! Too Noisy) Las Vegas!!!" which anticipates the far superior Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Mostly, these articles seem like straightforward introductions to some of the signal figures of the early '60s: hot-rod designer Big Daddy Roth, surf guitarist Dick Dale, teen recording tycoon Phil Spector, Andy Warhol debutante Baby Jane Holzer, the Cassius Clay-era Muhammad Ali. We even glimpse the Beatles in a profile of the yappy DJ Murray the K in "The Fifth Beatle."

The Ultimate Bathroom Book

This is a collection of short tales about contemporary New York and America written in the early 1960s. As you might expect, Wolfe is a little more rough around the edges here, and so there is a little hit and miss. However, The Last American Hero, about driver Junior Johnson and the early beginnings of NASCAR, is breathtaking - here are the true buds of Wolfe's ideas on American Masculinity that were to flower in The Right Stuff.

Far out, Tom Wolfe! Real buttonholes!

When I was in college, the heroes of the journalism department were Vietnam reporters David Halberstam and Neil Sheehan, and the so-called "New Journalism" reporters: Hunter Thompson, Gay Talese, and Tom Wolfe. Today, the best known is Tom Wolfe, thanks to books like "The Right Stuff." His first book was "The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby" published in 1965. It's an anthology of his first magazine articles, that appeared in Esquire and other periodicals.

The magazine article that first attracted attention was "There goes [Vroom! Vroom!] That Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby" about the California custom car culture. At the time, Wolfe didn't know a carburetor from a muffler, being a New Yorker without a car. However, a week in Southern California changed all that. And how. He quickly spotted the best and the brightest of the customizers was a goateed beatnik-type named "Big Daddy" Ed Roth. Roth's cross-town rival George Barris built far more custom cars than Roth, but Roth was the wild visionary--highly-intelligent, articulate, and a little crazy. Wolfe wrote about Roth with insight and understanding that the trade magazines like "Hot Rod," "Car Craft" and "Rod and Custom" apparently lacked.

It was the same thing with "The Last American Hero." Wolfe went down to North Carolina, spent a week with good-old boy NASCAR driver Junior Johnson, and returned with an insight into Johnson and Southern-style stock car racing that completely eluded magazines that covered the sport, among them "Car and Driver," and "Motor Trend."

Wolfe wrote about fashion, too. In "The Secret Vice," he told how Lyndon Johnson woke up one morning and realized that John Kennedy was not only smarter than he, but better dressed ("He dresses like some British ambassador"). Johnson zeroed in on the sleeve of Kennedy's custom-made suits, and realized the button holes on the sleeve were real: they actually buttoned and unbuttoned. The buttons on the sleeve of Johnson's off-the-rack Sears and Roebuck suits, on the other hand, were sewn on top of the fabric, like some decoration. Old Lyndon wanted real buttonholes! He flew to London (where Kennedy's suits were custom-made), walked into the first tailor he could find, and said, "Make me a suit with real buttonholes! I want to look like a British ambassador!"

All the first great magazine articles are here, including "The Fifth Beatle" about brash New York DJ Murray the K, "The Peppermint Lounge" where the Beatles twisted the night away, "Loverboy of the Bourgeoise" about Cary Grant, "The Marvelous Mouth " about Muhammad Ali, "The New Art Gallery Society," "The Nanny Mafia" and on and on. Classics, everyone. And a delight to read--and reread. As one critic put it, "Tom Wolf is a (blankety-blank) joy."

Get It If You Can Find It - Fantastic Read!

Tom Wolfe began his career as a "New Journalist" with this book back in 1965, and when I discovered it some thirty years later I instantly became a fan of what this man is sellin'. The articles collected in here range a wide variety of topics, and even the duller pieces are punctuated with traces of brilliance.

The most memorable for me (seeing as I haven't read it in a few years) deal with some interesting and illuminating topics, both of their time and somehow relevant today:

The title piece dealing with custom cars (what's the hottest reality show staple besides weddings and home decor?)

Phil Spector's oddness (chilling in light of his recent legal troubles)

The beginnings of what would become NASCAR (now the biggest sport in the South)

Cassius Clay AKA Muhammed Ali (the role of the black athelete in American society is still being worked out)

Vegas' rise from the desert

There are countless others, products of their time and yet transcending eras to speak to us today. Again, not every piece works, but it's a credit to the book as a whole that I can't recall which ones were failures.

About the Author

Christopher Gorse is Head of the Centre for the Built Environment at Leeds Metropolitan University. David Johnston is a Reader in Low Carbon Construction, lecturing in Environmental Science, Services and Construction Technology at Leeds Metropolitan University. A dictionary that needs a lot more definitions... go figure

I got this dictionary for the PE Construction test; I used it a few times to look up definitions while I was studying and I could not find any of the words (about 7-10) . Considering this is a construction dictionary, I expected it to be more thorough. Nonetheless, I decided to take it to the test and I got an answer correct on the test thanks to it..
All in all, this dictionary is lacking and needs work from the authors and publisher. Considering the price point, it may be a decent back up reference; but beware that you may not find what your are looking for when you really need it..

I'm a CIvil/Structural engineer and this book lacks a lot of terms that I look for in it.

[Edit] It doesn't include "Rough Opening" and the definition of "Soffit" is not what is commonly accepted in the USA. It does include british definitions such as "rubbish" and "Royal Institute of British Architects.

All in all, if you're not in the UK, this book is "rubbish".

Highly recommend taking it into the exam

This dictionary definitely helped me out when I could not remember or had never heard of a term on the PE Civil exam. Highly recommend taking it into the exam. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
