About the Author
Branden R. Williams (CISSP, CISM, CPISA, CPISM) leads an information security practice in a Global Security Consulting group at a major security firm in Flower Mound, TX and teaches in the NSA Certified Information Assurance program at the University of Dallas's Graduate School of Management. Branden has been involved in information technology since 1994, and focused on information security since 1996. He started consulting on payment security in 2004, assessing companies against the Visa CISP and Mastercard SDP programs. He has a Bachelors of Business Administration in Marketing from the University of Texas, Arlington, and a Masters of Business Administration in Supply Chain Management and Market Logistics from the University of Dallas.

About the Author
Dr. T. Ryan Gregory completed his Ph.D. in evolutionary biology and zoology at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada in 2002. He has been the recipient of several prestigious scholarships and fellowships, and was named the winner of the 2003 Howard Alper Postdoctoral Prize by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, one of the nation's premiere research awards. He has been a postdoctoral fellow at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the Natural History Museum in London, England.

An incredible resource.

This book, edited by T. Ryan Gregory is fantastic.

At 740 pages, TEotG provides an extensive overview of current genome biology that, while technical, remains enjoyable. The book is aimed for the grad. student/post doctoral fellow, i.e. those who already have a very strong understanding of biology and genetics, but I (a biology undergrad) really did not find it overly technical. To be sure, this isn't a quick weekend read, but Gregory and the many other authors are able to synthesize a huge amount of material into a manageable and enjoyable read. This book cleared up many misconceptions I had, and of course everyone will learn something entirely new from it. Highly recommended.

Oh, and the pages are glossy, and the cover is very nice. It looks good on the coffee table!

The book written by Gregory is a powerful tool for those interested in genome evolution. In particular, the book review an huge amount of published papers regarding the genome size and the nature and organization of DNA sequences that are generally involved in genome size increase during evolution. I strongly suggest this book to all readers interested in evolution at a molecular level since it introduce and guide the readers to the discovery of what happen to genome during evolution. The unique negative aspects is that is not consider at all the evolution of the cis-regulatory networks that represents an intriguing aspect of the genome evolution, but this is not surprising considering that other books are available on this topic.

About the Author

KAREN TIMBERLAKE is Professor Emerita of chemistry at Los Angeles Valley College, where she taught chemistry for allied health and preparatory chemistry for 36 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and her master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles. Professor Timberlake has been writing chemistry textbooks for 37 years. During that time, her name has become associated with the strategic use of pedagogical tools that promote student success in chemistry and the application of chemistry to real-life situations. More than one million students have learned chemistry using texts, laboratory manuals, and study guides written by Karen Timberlake. In 2004, she received the McGuffey Award in Physical Sciences from the Textbook Authors Association for her textbook Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, eighth edition, which has demonstrated excellence over time. In 2006, she received the “Texty” Textbook Excellence Award from the Textbook Authors Association for the first edition of Basic Chemistry. She has participated in education grants for science teaching including the Los Angeles Collaborative for Teaching Excellence 1LACTE2 and a Title III grant at her college. She speaks at conferences and educational meetings on the use of student-centered teaching methods in chemistry to promote the learning success of students. When Professor Timberlake is not writing textbooks, she and her husband relax by playing tennis, taking ballroom dance lessons, traveling, trying new restaurants, cooking, and taking care of their grandchildren, Daniel and Emily.

Amazing Read

I have to admit that this is the most interesting books I've ever read. If you want to know how the basics of life all tie together and form the world and existance around you then this is for you. This book has seriously opened up the world to me. I cannot look at anything around me like I used to. I recommend getting and reading this book solo. The way it is written makes it perfectly understandable without a teacher or professor of any kind. Everything is spelled out clearly with simple everday comparisons and examples. There are a ton of useful problems to work on to assist in cementing your knowledge in place. Seriously though I really can't think of any other book I've ever read that was more interesting than this one. Pick it up and prepare to see your world unfold in front of you as a new and chaotic, complex and beautifully organized universe.

This book is amazing. Easy to get an A in a class that uses this text. Everything that is in the book is easily understood, its unbelieveable, so easy to follow.
If you purchase the study guide you will be even better off.

An excellent source for Organic Chem

I used this text book in my Organic Chemistry class, and since I am a self-learner, I appreciate the way this text was written to be so user friendly. The diagrams and language used in the book were easy to understand, and made the very difficult topic of Organic Chem seem a little less intimidating. Overall, I was very pleased with this text book, and the price on Amazon is cheaper than anywhere else I found!

Six short stories, five of them about characters from Crutcher's novels. The protagonists are involved in sports, but the real theme is growing--grappling with something tough and finding the courage to carry on. For instance, in ``A Brief Moment in the Life of Angus Bethune'' (originally published in Connections, 1989, edited by Don Gallo), huge Angus has been elected Senior Winter Ball King as a joke: he can't dance. Too proud to stay away yet terrified to go, his problems are complicated by his secret love for the elected queen and by the fact that kids have always teased him because both his parents are gay. With wry courage, Angus achieves a triumph that should lighten any reader's spirits. The so-vulnerable Lionel (Stotan!) tries desperately to forgive the boy who caused his parents' and brother's deaths; less successfully, ``Telephone Man'' (The Crazy Horse Electric Game) is slowly loosening the heavy racism placed on him by his beloved father. In ``The Pin,'' Johnny wrestles his father in a can't-win battle neither wants to win--or lose; ``The Other Pin'' is about a wrestler in love with the girl he's supposed to beat at an upcoming match. Finally, ``In the Time I Get,'' Louie Banks (Running Loose) overcomes another kind of prejudice when he befriends a stranger who has AIDS. Most emmotive book you will ever read

This book is categorized for "young adults," but I would recommend these stories as much to an 18 year old as I would to an 80 year old. Crutcher's stories address the most sensitive aspects of society without any form of restriction. Don't read this book if you want a sugar-coat. There is no holding back as Crutcher drills to the bone of prejudice and other societal struggles. From the light-hearted tale of overweight Angus Bethune (who has four gay parents) to the dramatic story of gay teen with AIDs, every one of Crutcher's true stories make their impression. You will never forget these characters once you have met them.

Athletic Shorts

Even though Athletic Shorts is not my favorite book, it is still an exciting quick read. This is a book of six short stories that all relate to sports. Though all of the stories got my full attention, I will give you a quick taste of two that I liked most. The first story is call "The Pin", this is about Johnny Rivers who loves to wrestle, but the problem that Johnny's dad loves to wrestle just as much as he does. Johnny can't do anything good enough for his dad. So Johnny finds a way to prove himself to his dad. He challenges his dad to the mat. This next story is one to get your sense of humor up and running a little bit. In this story, "The Other Pin", Petey Shropshire is picked to wrestle Chris Byers. Chris is one of the best wrestlers in the state. The problem with this is that Chris Byers is a girl, and Petey doesn't want to get embarrassed and lose to a girl. Later Petey get together with Chris and they talk up a plan. This plan is made so that Petey won't get embarrassed and lose to a girl, and that no one with win the match. This plan is something that your going to just have to find out yourself. That was a little sneak preview of what good stories are in this book, now all you have to do is find out what happens in the other four stories.

Chris Crutcher does a great job of being short and to the point with these stories. This is why I enjoyed reading this book so much. I would rather read six short stories that are about something that I like, than to read on long boring novel that I only read because I could use a couple extra points here and there. Now that's just my opinion, but if your like me and enjoy a good short story, than this is a perfect book for you.

excellent book, with pointed and wonderful text

I really fell in love with this book. The text is well-written and witty, as well as being very instructive.
