When is a tiger not a tiger?
When is a mountain more than a mountain?
What is the sound of one hand clapping?

The stories of this collection come from the Zen Buddhist tradition-- from tales told by the Buddha himself to anecdotes from the lives of the Zen masters of China and Japan who helped pass on the Buddha's teachings. These stories reflect the wisdom, directness, and spontaneity of which Zen is known.

Zen stories delight as they challenge, enchant as they point towards a different way of seeing things. In the simple language of stories passed down over hundreds of years, this collection can point us toward our own natural Mind of wisdom, insight, peace, and compassion. They help us see past our seeming differences into what is the same for all of us.

Rafe Martin, a student of Zen for over 25 years, introduces these tales, providing both background and insight into the collection. Junko Morimoto's beautiful illustrations reflect the tranquility, wit, and power of these stories.

From Publishers Weekly
This thought-provoking collection, designed ``for the tender heart that children and adults naturally share,'' provides a window onto the contemplative nature of Buddhism. The selections offer many layers of meaning for different levels of interest. Whether they concern a baby fish asking a wise old fish to explain the sea ("When you swim you reveal its presence. It's just because it's so close to you that it's very hard to see") or a would-be swordsman who must first learn patience before he learns his desired skill, the stories all illumine, stimulate, instruct and ultimately hint at ageless truths. Like beads on a necklace, the stories are strung together and unified by Morimoto's (My Hiroshima) agile illustrations. Her diverse styles range from watercolors to pen-and-ink, from charcoals to cartoons. Gracefully compiled and beautifully designed, this is a one-of-a-kind book. All ages.

A Treasury of Unusual Zen Stories that Western readers will like
By Hello Moto
If you like Jon Muth's "Zen Shorts" for children, about the panda named Stillwater and his interactions with 3 children, you will love "One Hand Clapping." "One Hand Clapping" came out in 1995, much earlier than "Zen Shorts" and is unsurpassed in the story selection and the beauty of its illustrations. Each tale is a self-contained page or two, written in simple, elegant language, with beautiful illustrations. In collections of Jataka Tales (from India), or even in folktales from Japan, China or other Asia cultures, you may encounter stories and fables whose morality does not necessarily translate into today's values, and/or into Western morality. But this is a collection of stories that I think will resonate with, if not move, most modern Western readers.
One story I remember from my prior ownership of this book is the story of a nun who sought shelter for the night in a village but the villagers turned her down. It was going to be very cold that night. She walked out of town and up a hillside and slept under a cherry tree. The night was so cold, the ground was covered with frost by the morning. When she awoke. She looked up into the tree and saw the sunlight shining through the frosted cherry blossoms. She was dazzled by the beauty of it. She stood up and bowed towards the village and composed a haiku in which she thanked them, for through their actions she was able to experience the sight of the sunlight on frosted sakura. One reason I want to find this book again is to re-read that haiku.
Fifteen years ago this story stunned me. Part of the lesson was not "let go of anger" it was that she didn't have the anger in the first place. She was truly living a Buddhist life. Since my first reading years ago, I have learned other lessons by remembering this story. The great Zen stories are like that---one may get more and more meaning out of it over time.
I have taught the pre-school class at our Buddhist temple for 9 years and this book contains stories that neither I nor our reverend had heard before. I lent this book out once years ago and it was never returned. I have been looking for this book in Buddhist bookstores and in the religion sections of major bookstores but none of them knew about it nor carried it. I am delighted to find a few copies here through Amazon.

Beautiful, Simple & Touching Book
By chrisjr
I read this book while sitting in a book store one day after not being able to put it down. It is a compilation of simplified tales and fables from the Zen perspective. Though this is a book intended for children I think many adults would appreciate this book to and this would make a great book to read to a child. The tales are very simple yet hold a lot of deep meaning and one could think about them a long time while gleaning new insights. The illustrations are neat too. Over all a very gentle and beautiful book which I would highly recommend. I am getting a copy for my mom for Christmas!

French Carabiniers: 1679-1871 (Officers and Soldiers), by Olivier Lapray

This book traces the glorious history of the elite French cavalry. Through 61 plates of highly detailed uniform illustrations, Andr Jouineau guides the reader from the first company of carabiniers established within in each regiment―those superior marksmen equipped with a rifle, the gauge of precision par excellence―sought after by Louis XIV in 1690, to the fiery carabiniers of Napoleon III’s Imperial Guard who disappeared in defeat in 1870. The authors’ primary emphasis, however, is given to the First Empire.

Since the seventies, Andre Jouineau has dedicated himself to studies in history and uniforms. Regular contributor to various magazines, he was appointed official painter of the Army in 1985 (title kept until 1994). Then, in the mid-nineties, he tackled computer illustration, which allowed "creating" a new uniformology genus. Beautiful pictorial reference of the French heavy cavalry
By D. Kong
"Carabiniers 1679-1871" is the title of volume 22 of the Officers and Soldiers series of Histories & Collections. This work is completed by Olivier LaPray and Andre Jouineau, and translated by Alan McKay. Anyone who has bought one of the books of this series knows what to expect from this book and they will not be disappointed. This book is 84 pages long with pagination numbering starting from the book cover and ending on the back cover. It covers the famed French Carabiniers from the Ancien Regime to the end of the Second Empire (Napoleon III).

The chapters are organized as follows: 1. The Carabiniers under the Ancien Regime (which includes: The Royal Carabiniers; The Count of Provence's Carabiniers; Monsieur's Carabiniers; 1st and 2nd Regiments of Carabiniers); 2. The Carabiniers during the French Revolution (The Campaigns during the Revolution; During the Consulate); 3. The Emperor's Carabiniers (The First Empire Campaigns; The 5th Squadron; The Austrian Campaign; The Helmet and the Cuirass; The Campaign of 1813; The Campaign for France; The Hundred Days); 4. From One Empire to Another (Napoleon III's Carabiniers; Franco-Prussian War. A brief bibliography (with only 4 entries) is listed on page 82.

Also of note is that the 1791 model standard is illustrated on page 14, the An XII model standard is illustrated on page 21; the 1804 model standard is on page 29; the 1812 model standard is illustrated on page 43; the July Monarch standard is illustrated on page 63; and the 1860 model standard is illustrated on page 80.

As in all the other books of this series, the illustrations are rendered beautifully by computer graphics. They are often accompanied by a brief reference, e.g., Carabinier in the 1st Regiment wearing full dress after Hoffmann. There are brief discussions of the history of this arm of the French cavalry and Alan McKay's English translation seems to have improved and is much better than his earlier works in the series.

As I commented before in the earlier books of this series, those who would be interested in buying these books, buy them not for their literature, but for the beautiful illustrations. This book will be a good reference for the avid modelers and wargamers who want a quick reference on this subject to paint their figures. For the more serious uniformologist, they should refer to the primary sources of historical records.

The second page of this book shows that the subject of the French Dragoon is slated to be published as volume 24 of this series which I will eagerly await its publication.

Excellent Uniform Coverage of an Elite Unit
By danny boy
The white coated regiments of Carabiniers with their brass helmets and breastplates were considered the most elegant units of the French Napoleonic army. This excellent book encapsulates all the major uniforms worn by this Elite corps since their founding by Louis XIV up to the Franco-Prussian War.

Great book on this type of units uniforms
By Scott Bailey
Another great book in the series. Uniforms are described in great detail and the color pictures gives the reader of each unit the full coverage of the uniform. A brief history as to the mission performed and each battle that this unit participated in. After reading I was surprised by the mission performed by this type of unit and the many battles they came out of successfully.

An Essential Book for Leaders
By Terry
As a federal government manager for more than 30 years, I have too often seen the results of an inability or unwillingness to collaborate for the public good. With Russ Linden's book, I no longer have an excuse for failing to make collaboration work. Leading Across Boundaries offers insights and concrete tools that make collaboration understandable and achievable in a world that demands it more and more.

The author seems to leave no aspect of this important topic unaddressed. From the opening chapter which makes the case for why collaboration is essential, he moves to present a straightforward and easy to understand framework for collaborating. Selecting a high priority project, the appropriate people to work together, forging shared goals, using an open process, and gaining the support of a champion are elements of the framework, but Linden is "spot-on" in noting that any successful collaboration is anchored in building relationships and trust. Ordering people to collaborate is a prescription for failure.

Leading Across Boundaries does not stop there, because Russ Linden, having worked with thousands of state, local, and federal government leaders, knows that the best of frameworks will confront serious real-life challenges. This is no academic treatise on collaboration. It is anchored in the meeting room, not the classroom (though studying it in the classroom will avoid a lot of meeting room failures!). Its true power comes in teasing out, beautifully illustrating, and offering real-world, workable answers to the personal, interpersonal, cultural, and organizational problems that confront those who seek to foster collaborative efforts. And a real plus - there is no academic jargon here, just down-to-earth, clear prose.

One of Linden's great strengths as a writer is his ability to immerse the reader in short but well-crafted case studies - enabling us to see collaboration up close. And he does not shy away from presenting failures as well as successes. Why did FEMA's Michael Brown fail in responding to Hurricane Katrina while the Coast Guard's Thad Allen proved a model of effectiveness amidst the same chaos? How did one federal manager bring about a major collaborative effort among nine University of California campuses to enhance minority enrollment in graduate programs, despite an inherently go-it-alone academic culture? How is it that Israelis and Arabs can actually work together despite centuries of mutual distrust? How do you get tobacco farmers and health advocates to actually cooperate - indeed, how do you get them to even talk to each other? No one can say that Linden doesn't take on tough issues.

One of the beauties of this book is that it can be read - and used - in so many ways. Sixteen major case studies allow in-depth probing of collaboration and what makes it work or fail to work. Over 70 tables, figures and exhibits bring out major points in easy to locate and remember fashion. Many of these offer tips that are valuable checklists for collaborative success. An appendix offers a "Create Your Own Game Plan" set of worksheets to think through and strategize for your own collaborative efforts. And if the book whets your appetite for even more, which it will, a companion Web site offers additional resources.

If you are an existing or aspiring leader, your success will depend on your ability to collaborate. Someone once said that "practice alone does not make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect." Leading Across Boundaries will help you engage in prefect practice - and much stronger and more successful collaboration than you probably thought possible.

Great teacher
By jriddle3
During my 33 years of federal service, I worked for a time managing federal-sector leadership programs. Russ Linden taught in many of my programs and I used two of his previous books, "Seamless Government" and "Working Across Boundaries" as user-friendly texts whether or not Dr. Linden was available to speak. I found Linden to be an excellent teacher due to his extensive experience working with many of the entities he writes about and his way of structuring the lessons learned so that those lessons could be applied to a variety of situations. As I read "Leading Across Boundaries", I had high expectations and they were met.

Three things stood out for me. First, his emphasis on leadership is stronger in this book. Leadership of collaboration that he addresses is much more difficult (and less understood) than leadership that comes from formal authority. With examples ranging from the lessons of Katrina (yes, some were good such as the Coast Guard response after they took the lead) to the State of Washington's government-performance efforts, Linden delves into the leadership tactics employed to glean lessons that can be applied elsewhere.

Second, recognizing that the baby-boomers are about to exit the stage, Linden spends time writing about the collaborative nature of younger members of the workforce and the technology that can aid in collaboration.

Third, Linden maintains the management part of his advice. That is, those process and structures (such as group formation, team work and "fusion centers") we can use as leaders to assure fairness and buy-in of conflicting stakeholders. As I read, I was looking to whether or not this book could be a stand-alone text and not require reading his previous work - and it can. "Leading Across Boundaries" is version 3.0 of Linden's lifetime work and an up-to-date reference for anyone interested in leadership involving multiple players. I look forward to Linden covering the leadership lessons learned from the response to the current oil spill.

Collaboration in a Networked World
By Charles R. Stripling III
After over thirty years in local government management during which I sampled a multitude of organization, staff, personal, professional and team development tools (along with the alphabet soup of HPO, TQM, and related fads), I concluded that it is best to focus on those tools that will have a long term impact on the quality of service delivery. Not many do. Russ Linden's new "workbook" on Leading Across Boundaries is on of those resources or tools that when used properly can have a game changing impact on a person and organization. Its not only an easy read, but approaches the subject with implementation as the focus. He encourages the reader to connect to the concepts of collaboration through completion of helpful exercises, writing notes to oneself and continually revisiting learned concepts with self tests.

As a disciple of the case method, I was particularly drawn to Linden's use of that technique for illustrating in real world settings how collaboration succeeds and fails.

I was particularly struck by his observations on Dick Gregg's experience at the Financial Management Service in the Treasury Department. I am a believer in Gregg's philosophy of "leaders should articulate a small number of priorities and expectations, keep the message simple, reinforce at every opportunity and fiercely guard the agenda."

His description of "fusion centers" and how the main barrier to success is trust is right on. And, what book on management would be complete in today's world without mention of the Millennials. Linden is a great advocate of the positive role they can play in our world.

How can I not love his reference to Abraham Lincoln's use of collaboration as documented in Doris Keanrs Goodwin's Team of Rivals (one of my top five favorite books).

Recognizing the networked society in which we live, he also connects us to the Web through his offer of free premium content an Internet link away as an added bonus. I found these extra resources very helpful in understanding Linden's explanation of the collaborative philosophy.

Thanks Russ for a great tool all of us can use in an increasinly complicated world. A must read.

Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business, by Neil Postman

What happens when media and politics become forms of entertainment? As our world begins to look more and more like Orwell's 1984, Neil's Postman's essential guide to the modern media is more relevant than ever.

"It's unlikely that Trump has ever read Amusing Ourselves to Death, but his ascent would not have surprised Postman.” -CNN

Originally published in 1985, Neil Postman’s groundbreaking polemic about the corrosive effects of television on our politics and public discourse has been hailed as a twenty-first-century book published in the twentieth century. Now, with television joined by more sophisticated electronic media—from the Internet to cell phones to DVDs—it has taken on even greater significance. Amusing Ourselves to Death is a prophetic look at what happens when politics, journalism, education, and even religion become subject to the demands of  entertainment. It is also a blueprint for regaining control of our media, so that they can serve our highest goals.

“A brilliant, powerful, and important book. This is an indictment that Postman has laid down and, so far as I can see, an irrefutable one.” –Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post Book World

Review
“I can’t think of a more prophetic, more thoughtful, more necessary – and yes, more entertaining – book about media culture.” –Victor Navasky, National Book Award-winning author of The Art of Controversy

“All I can say about Neil Postman’s brilliant Amusing Ourselves to Death is: Guilty As Charged.” –Matt Groening, Creator of The Simpsons

“As a fervent evangelist of the age of Hollywood, I publicly opposed Neil Postman’s dark picture of our media-saturated future. But time has proved Postman right. He accurately foresaw that the young would inherit a frantically all-consuming media culture of glitz, gossip, and greed.” –Camille Paglia

“A brilliant, powerful, and important book. This is an indictment that Postman has laid down and, so far as I can see, an irrefutable one.” –Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post Book World

About the Author
Neil Postman (1931–2003) was chairman of the Department of Communication Arts at New York University and founder of its Media Ecology program. He wrote more than twenty books.

From AudioFile
This McCluhanesque diatribe begins by observing that our present and future resemble the predictions in Brave New World more than those of 1984. Technology, in particular television, has shaped our politics, news, religion, education, every aspect of our world. Rigginbach's reading is a little too fast-paced for this material; furthermore, the material is not suited to an audio format. Why did the author allow his thought to be corrupted by allowing their promulgation through non-print media. In addition, the examples he cites are ten years old; this week's television better supports his conclusions. The message is valid, but the medium through which it's presented is flawed. S.F.W. Relevant, Compelling, Well-Argued, Well-Written
By %%%%
"Amusing Ourselves to Death" is an amazingly written and well-argued book. As Postman notes: In the Victorian Era (mid-late 1800s), novelist Charles Dickens had as much fame as The Beatles in 1960, Michael Jackson in 1980, or Brad Pitt in 2014. The farm boy in the late 1700s carried a pamphlet of Thomas Paine's writings in his back pocket. Today, school-children carry iphones with pictures of Eminem (boy) or Taylor Swift (girl). In the mid-1800s, Abraham Lincoln and Stephan A. Douglas debated in public FOR HOURS on the dire issues of their time. Today, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have bite-sized debates where one side speaks for 1 minute and the other side gets a 30-second rebuttal.
.
Clearly, the people then were different from the people now in terms of mainstream intelligence. The reason, Postman argues, is that the people in Dickens' era were children of "The Age of Typography," and the people today (us) are the children of "The Age of Show Business," or "The Age of Television." Reading was life to people in the older days; watching television is life to us now. And television, however entertaining, cannot be anything but sheer junk because it works through images, sensationalism, and emotional gratification. Writing, on the other hand, requires patience, detachment, memory, and reason. The result is that we are dumber than our ancestors. Incredulous? Pick up the book and let Postman prove it to you.
.
This book was written in 1985, but don't be fooled; it still wields enormous relevance today -- The chapter titled, "Peek-a-Boo-World" as well as the "Information-to-action-ratio" theory outlined in it are particularly pertinent regarding the modern-day use of the internet, especially with portable laptops, tablets, and cellphones. With those gadgets, we have become, in short, a nation buried in triviality, as Postman predicted. Furthermore, television viewership today has not decreased with the rise of the internet, iphones, and such. On the contrary, studies show that we still watch as much television as before, despite the alarmingly rising rate of electronic use. In this book, Postman focuses on politics, religion, education, and the news. These, he says, are serious topics that are downgraded to mere amusement because television, by design, works by making everything amusing. In effect, we come to expect everything in life to be entertaining when, in actuality, some things must be endured. Again, I urge you to read this book carefully. I've read it four times. It's ideas have allowed me to wean myself away from television and on to typography. Let it have the same effect on you.

Whether we like to admit it or not
By Amazon Customer
Whether we like to admit it or not, technology has made its way into our lives and we will never be the same again. Every human being sees this phrase with eyes of either positivity or negativity. “Amusing Ourselves to Death” addresses the progression of typography to television and how these mediums have influenced our media, politics, and news intake. Neil Postman’s 1985 perspective on the reshaping of our culture is insightful, bold, and brutally honest.
Postman’s writing might seem offensive to some, but in reality, he is striving to telling it as it is. He identifies that we as a culture thrive off of the desire to be entertained. The way we communicate reflects such desires. On page 13 Postman writes: “What I mean to point out here is that the introduction into a culture of a technique such as writing or a clock is not merely an extension of man’s power to bind time but a transformation of his way of thinking-and, of course, of the content of his culture.” Every detail of our lives is a product of the way we progressively think and respond. He then moves on to what he calls “Media as Epistemology,” referring to the ways we use media to gain or interpret knowledge. He references Frye, Jesus, and Socrates as influential figures who have influenced our understanding of truth. Postman speaks very metaphorically throughout his text, which for some, might make him hard to follow.
The book doesn’t jump straight into a narrative about television, as the title might suggest. Postman takes about half the book to build up to those thoughts and instead starts out the early chapters with the original uses of the printed word. The slow progression to his main point seems long, but in a lot of ways crucial to the point he is trying to make. An enjoyable result of this book is that instead of simply bashing an entire aspect of our culture, he describes it in detail and points out factual components from beginning to end. From the Age of Exposition to the Age of Show Business, Postman describes the evolution between these stages with great quantities of truth. Weaved throughout his writings, Postman offers warnings and awareness that he hopes for the reader to grasp and understand. On page 113 Postman states: “It has been demonstrated many times that a culture can survive misinformation and false opinion. It has not yet been demonstrated whether a culture can survive if it takes the measure of the world in twenty-two minutes. Or if the value of its news is determined by the number of laughs it provides.” These kind of statements point at the weaknesses of media’s role in our society. Postman frequently uses these type of comments to drive his point home.
With all of that being said, Postman's statements were truthful, but I felt that the book aired more on the side of negativity. I would have liked to hear him touch on the different positive products of electronics and the impacting changes technology has made on our culture as well. Laced with personal bias I think it’s beneficial for Postman to make us more aware, I’m just not the most supportive of the way he goes about doing it.

Brave New World or 1984?
By odessafile
In George Orwell's book '1984' (written in 1949) his anxiety was that books would be burnt to avoid 'heresies' being spread among the citizens; earlier (1931) Aldous Huxley had written his 'Brave New World', with its thesis that books would not need to be burnt, because no one would read them - we would be 'amusing ourselves to death'. In 2017 it looks as if Huxley made the better bet. Almost unheard of in the publishing of this sort of book, this ''20th anniversary edition'' of Neil Postman's enduring and far-sighted analysis was published in 2005. The original was written in 1985 when television was the 'enemy', but it is even more relevant today in the age of Twitter, Facebook and the others.

Communication in the Age of Virtual Reality (Routledge Communication Series)From Brand: Routledge

This volume addresses virtual reality (VR) -- a tantalizing communication medium whose essence challenges our most deeply held notions of what communication is or can be. The editors have gathered an expert team of engineers, social scientists, and cultural theorists for the first extensive treatment of human communication in this exciting medium.

The first part introduces the reader to VR's state-of-the-art as well as future trends. In the next section, leading research scientists discuss how knowledge of communication can be used to build more effective and exciting communication applications of virtual reality. Looking ahead, the authors explore pioneering approaches to VR narratives, interpersonal communication, the use of 3D sound, and the building of VR entertainment complexes. In the final section, the authors zoom out to view the big picture -- the psychological, social, and cultural implications of virtual reality. Thought-provoking discussions consider important communication issues such as:
* How will virtual reality influence perception of reality?
* What are the legal issues defining communication in virtual reality?
* What kind of cultural trends will this technology encourage?
