The ranks of the heretofore slim world of LDS satirists (dominated by cartoonists Pat Bagley and Calvin Grondahl and columnist Robert Kirby) have been swelled by the next generation: this compilation of ruthlessly funny articles is as irreverent as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is decorous. The book is edited by Bigelow, coauthor of Mormonism for Dummies and cofounder of the Sugar Beet (an LDS version of the satirical publication the Onion). Bigelow and his staff of Sugar Beet writers, whose identities are hidden behind ultra-Mormon pseudonyms, ferret out the delicious humor tucked away in Mormonism's quirkiest doctrines and cultural extremes in articles like "Gay polygamists make bid for legitimacy"; "Zions Bank offers financing for scrapbookers"; and "Elvis Presley accepts posthumous baptism." The humor grows mostly out of the rich soil of Wasatch Front culture, so some of it may go over the heads of converts to the faith, and many stalwart Mormons would declare the writing dangerously "light-minded." But a solid core of LDS (and LDS-raised) readers will find The Enquirer a tie-loosening, glue-gun melting pleasure—and an excellent Christmas gift for friends and family. (Nov. 6)

Like the Onion, but More Appropriate!

Oh my heck! This is Mormon beach reading without equal. Especially Mormons who might not feel TOO guilty about reading on the beach on Sunday. It's a funny, satirical, insiders view of Mormonism and the culture it has created. Written in the newsy style of The Onion, the Mormon Tabernacle Enquirer takes a peek (and a gentle poke) at the quirks of missionaries, the Relief Society, youth programs and more, and anyone who has ever regularly spent at least 3 hours of every Sunday in a chapel in Utah will know EXACTLY what these people are talking about. You'll giggle, you'll laugh, but you'll also say to yourself, "Yup, by golly, that's us..."

About the Author

Recognized internationally for his work in Christianity and culture, Francis A. Schaeffer authored more than twenty books, which have been translated into a score of languages and sold millions worldwide. He and his wife, Edith, founded L'Abri Fellowship international study and discipleship centers. Schaeffer passed away in 1984, but his influence and legacy continue worldwide.

Christianity for the whole spectrum of life

Francis Schaeffer stands out as one of the most influential evangelicals of the twentieth century. This collection of his writings is invaluable because it not only contains the philosophical writings that made him a hero to disillusioned youth looking for answers, but also contains the practical spiritual writings of Francis Schaeffer the Presbyterian pastor. Schaeffer's philosophy, well laid out in "The God Who Is There", focuses on the assumptions and presuppositions of various world views. With a sort of sanctified Socratic method, he argues that when one follows particular world views to their logical conclusions, all will ultimately fall apart, all except Christianity. His theological writings insist that the key to all truth is that God is not only there, but that He has communicated to mankind in human language, hence the Old and New Testaments are not only essential to theology and doctrine, but to all human understanding. His later writings follow his own presuppositions to their logical conclusions as he examines current culture, politics and in particular, the abortion/infanticide/euthanasia issues. This collection is organized by topics, including philosophy, spirituality, Western Culture, the church and his view of the Bible as the source of truth. Schaeffer is tough on modern culture at times, and often tough on the twentieth century church. But he is always reasonable and compassionate. Most economical way to obtain all of Schaeffer's work except his last.

There are few writers with a real vision of the state of human affairs in our time. Schaeffer traces religious and secular history in science, music, arts and literature, and shows us where our path left the one God would have us walk. Schaeffer discusses the most difficult subjects like abortion and infanticide in the past and present.

Humanism is the religion of the 21st century. Humanism elevates mankind to godlike status. Humans have no power to save themselves or the earth. I challenge anyone to read Schaeffer and not discover new facts and dynamics about the deathspiral of Christianity's relevance in the world.

Frances Schaeffer does not offer pablum to the masses and pulls no punches allowing us to feel better about ourselves apart from Jesus Christ. God is there and makes Himself known. Schaeffer is a great tour guide on a literary pilgrimage of faith.

Five volume set. Very readable type and of good quality for paperbacks. If you're a serious student of society, history, or the absolute truth of God - add this set to your book shelf.

Deep thinker. Finished my first of the five volume set. Dr. Schaeffer will stretch you but ultimately build your faith in Christianity generally and Jesus Christ specifically.

Very Useful and Informative

Review: This book attempts to describe the major fields in industrial/organizational psychology. For a textbook designed for use in an introductory-level course, it does its job fairly well.
This book is very easy to use, and utilizes most of the more common aids to direct the reader to the most-salient information in each chapter, such as using bold-face for definitions and breaking the chapter up into several sections. It also provides a tremendous amount of additional information used to strengthen and support what is presented in each chapter. Most of this work is accomplished using the sides of each page, which is common in most current textbooks. The sheer number of visual aids used throughout the book is impressive, and despite the frequency with which they are used, they are usually helpful.
The single greatest fault that I can raise with this textbook is that, quite simply, the scope is so broad. Its purpose is to present the reader with a brief exposure to each of the major fields in I-O Psychology, and it succeeds in doing this. However, many of the chapters feel a little too general, especially towards the end of the book, when the authors are still presenting more subsets of I-O Psychology. Several chapters are used in the front of the book to give the reader a working terminology for the book and a basic theoretical framework needed to better understand some of the more difficult concepts in this field. Since the book never moves beyond an introduction to all these subsets of I-O Psychology, however, it seems as if some of this information could be trimmed down so that more depth could be achieved in some of the later chapters. Of course, the danger with this approach might be that the book would move beyond the purpose for which it was intended.
For the most part, this is a well-constructed, informative textbook, and serves to introduce its readers to I-O Psychology. The chapters flow very well, and the textbook is broken down nicely so that the reader is never overwhelmed with too much information at one sitting. Some chapters are more effective than others, and some of the introductory chapters seem a bit unnecessary, but those are essentially the book's only failings.
This is a good textbook that I would recommend to anyone looking for information on I-O Psychology. At the very least, it will help readers determine where their true interest is in this field and provide them with a good working vocabulary as well.

The late Romare Bearden, a premier African American artist in his own right, devoted 15 years to researching and writing this magnificent study of the lives and achievements of 36 significant African American artists born prior to 1925. He and longtime friend and coauthor Henderson were motivated by frustration over the lack of literature on black artists. nice book

i had a class in college that used this book as a text book. ienjoyed it then, but it wasn't until later that i really had a chanceto sit down and enjoy it. information is good and the pictures are plentiful. this is a very nice book for anyone interested in african american art and culture. another book that i would like to recommend is called souls grown deep: african american vernacular art of the south, volume one. i bought it at an art fair in new york in late january. i'm not sure that it has been released nationally. i've contacted amazon in an attempt to get more info. i have it so i know it is out. this type of book (souls and the history...) are too few and far between.

A Priceless Treasure

This is quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. As an avid reader, I do not make that claim lightly. What makes this book so remarkable is how Bearden and Henderson both bring the artists to life and give you a deep appreciation for their work.
No other book I've read on the arts has left me similarly breathless. While many of them have been quite competent at explaining things like "Impressionism," "The Renaissance," or "The Harlem Renaissance," none have so beautifully balanced an explanation of the artist and of the artist's work. By bringing the people to life, Bearden and Henderson have brought the art to life. They have made a priceless contribution to our understanding of African-American artists, their work and the challenges they had to overcome to pursue their passion.
This book is a must-have. It will deepen your appreciation of art and of the contributions that African-Americans have made to it.

My nephew checked out a copy of this book from the library when I was helping him with a school project. I loved it right from the start! I ordered a copy of it for my son who is a young artist. My son has a "Ribbons and Bows, Inc" youth art business and was a YesCarolina 2011 Young Entrepreneur of the Year. He will enjoy this book for many years to come!

This is not a complaint - it provides information that would be easily understood by an 8th grader

The value of this textbook is dependent upon your needs - it is a very basic introduction to electricity and electronic components, originally written in 1964. It is written apparently for elementary/middle school students. This is not a complaint - it provides information that would be easily understood by an 8th grader. It is not a textbook that is at a post-secondary school level, or for someone looking for more a quick introduction to electronic components to be able to move onto more advanced subjects. It would have been ideal for my 7th grade, 10 week electric shop class that I took the year before this book was originally written. Unfortunately, it does not cover "cover" newer information. As an example, there are several pages used to explain how electric motors work, using commutator brush theory. There is no mention of the "modern" brushless technology. I had to use it for an online course as one section. That is a different issue, but the course cost has not been worth it, so far - the textbook is fine if you want a basic book written for middle schoolers.

Solid, Common Sense Approach to Connecting

For me, the need for business people to have a very definite game plan; a blueprint for success, packs the most bang for the buck. Too often, people tend to going running around trying to market themselves or a prodcut or service, but they don't really know the best way to accomplish that goal.

Also helpful is the importance of getting your message across quickly and concisely. Nobody wants to listen to much of anything over 30 seconds, so the idea of keeping it short and sweet is so relevent.

The author has a wonderful rapport established with the reader; his anecdotes are humorous and he just lets people know he's a nice guy willing to help. Although some of his observations are fairly pedestrian for seasoned professionals, it's not bad for a refresher course; and for the young executives, this could help launch a successful career.

Overall, this is a nice resource guide to weaving your way into the often baffling approach to making the right, long lasting connections that may come in handy immediately, or perhaps several years down the road. It's certainly a modest price to pay for even one tactic that could help you land some big account, or prevent from losing one.
