After each story there is a list of questions, based on its theme. These questions encourage the readers to talk about themselves, their family, friends and other things that people normally chat about. Answering and asking questions is a great tool to develop conversational skills. You will be prepared to go to Russia and make new friends there! Following each story, there is a list of vocabulary specific to that story. Thus, you do not have to go to the back of the book to search for the translation of an unfamiliar word. Of course, the readers should already know at least some words, such as pronouns, and be familiar with the concept of declension of nouns, pronouns and adjectives and verb conjugation. Each story repeats some of the previous vocabulary for better memorization and adds several new words.

Creative Stories for Beginning Russian Readers
By Barron D. Kidd
Tatiana is an excellent teacher. Thorough and precise. She grew up in Soviet Russia so she had to be thorough and precise…..or else. She wants you to communicate in Russian as well as possible. Learning from a writer is more exciting than just memorizing lessons from a “teacher”.

The stories are short but dense covering all aspects of Russian family and life. The stories are on one page with vocabulary, grammar and short exercises on the opposite page. However, they are not for absolute beginners. But once you understand the alphabet and basic words and grammar these stories are helpful and challenging.

The best reason to read these stories is so that you can get to the next level. That’s when her stories get really interesting. Think Agatha Christie meets Dostoyevsky.

Great reading for 1st Level learners
By NMCA Charlie Bowles
I wrote the Forward to this book based on a couple of years of irregular lessons I spent learning basic Russian from Tatiana Mikhaylova. During those lessons she pulled out papers with short stories about normal life in Russia and through those stories I was introduced to vocabulary, to reading Cryllic, and to understand the sometimes strange idiomatic and grammatical ways Russians phrase things. It was through those stories that the normal ways of conversing in Russian could be learned. Neither the study of grammar through a myriad of grammar books nor lessons on Rosetta Stone (or other online, audio and video systems) can teach that. Not that those methods aren't good for a learner, but what I learned through these stories taught me so much more of the real conversation. I do think that the ONLY way to properly learn Russian is from a good teacher who speaks the language natively.

I should say that I did not pre-read the stories in this book or edit the Russian content in any way. I bought this book through this Amazon link and received it in the mail today and, with excitement, began to read the stories. And I'm glad to report it was relatively easy to read, both out loud in Russian, albeit slowly, and with understanding using only my memory of my lessons that ended over two years ago. I used vocabulary included in the book and a couple of times I looked up words in the dictionary or even on my iPhone. But what made me happy was that with only the limited lessons I've had, I was able to understand those sentences and therefore understand the story. That was exciting!

20 Easy Stories for Beginners is a language learning tool. If you don't have a little exposure to the language, know a bit about conjugation, and understand that Russians use grammatical constructions that are very different from English, this book may be intimidating. It assumes you know some basics. Google Translate, or any translator program, NEVER gets a translation right (this may be true of most languages). They cannot understand the different ways of using the grammar. They don't know the idioms. They do not understand colloquialisms. They don't seem to know anything about how punctuation is used in Russian. They simply string together a bunch of one-word translations to make a meaningful statement. I have used translators a lot in my studies, but what they print out is so far from an actual good-English version of the Russian sentence, phrase or paragraph that they become almost laughable, and highly inaccurate. I use them sometimes to give me a general overview of what I'm reading. But then it's down to using actual Russian understanding to create a real meaning.

20 Easy Stories for Beginners teaches how to do that.

I am pleased to say that I am able to read these ...

I have studied the Russian language with Tatiana for a little over a year now. After a year of study, I am pleased to say that I am able to read these stories and comprehend their meaning. I also appreciate how she has questions after each story that are typically used in everyday conversation, so I am able to practice both writing and speaking like a native speaker. The vocabulary from each story is used as a building block for the following story, which is very thorough and methodical. Lastly, I have a few books in Russian, but it is difficult to read them aloud because I am not sure where the accent should be placed. This book has accent marks for each word, which really helps me, not just with reading, but also with speaking the language correctly. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand the Russian language and speak it more fluently!
