About the Author
George Kordis is Assistant Professor of Iconography (Theory and Practice) at the University of Athens (Greece). In addition, he teaches the art of icon painting at the Athens School of Art. He is Visiting Professor at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music's summer program; at the University of Art and Design in Cluj Napoca, Romania; at the School of Theology of Bucharest, Romania; and at the Pedagogical University of Odessa, Ukraine.

Wonderful book

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in icons. Unlike other icon painting books this one deals with the compositional layout of the icons instead of how to paint them. Other books, many of which are very good for learning to paint icons, really fall down when it comes to design. You basically have to copy old icons. Not that it's bad to copy (in icon painting it is the accepted way to learn), but at some point icon artists are going to want to mature into designing their own. This book will be a great help for that. It is thoroughly orthodox and yet is able to teach freedom within a traditional framework.

In addition, the drawings that are included are truly exquisite.

No iconographer should be without this book

This book is very unique. It deals with the drawing and composition of Byzantine icons. There is literally nothing else like it around in English. I thought it was a very valuable technical resource once you chewed through the theory. His painting style isn't much to my tastes, but his approach to drawing and composition are to be emulated. This book should be studied and memorized before anyone even attempts to paint an icon. My teacher (Fr. Patrick Doolan) always told me, "A good drawing equals a good Icon".

He develops his argument in such a way that one can easily remember the distinguishing aspects of a Byzantine line

George Kordis, Icon As Communion: The Ideals and Compositional Principles of Icon Painting, translated by Caroline Makropoulos (Brookline: Holy Cross Orthodox Press, 2010). Pp. 102. Paperback $19.95.

This book doesn’t focus on the theology of the icon itself, but rather it focuses on the theology of the line. By connecting the way the line is drawn to Orthodox theology, he is able to distinguish a Byzantine style that sets it a part from other styles of art. What he does is actually quite remarkable. He develops his argument in such a way that one can easily remember the distinguishing aspects of a Byzantine line, yet, at the same time, he’s teaching the reader about key Orthodox theological points. It’s like getting two birds with one stone – the reader learns about God and art at the same time.

Kordis’s thesis is based upon the doctrine of salvation: theosis (deification – or becoming god by grace). Theosis is the participation of humanity in the energies of God, rather than the nature (essence) of God. This participation is a movement by both God and humanity towards each other, and this movement is communion. However, it’s not human nature as a whole that has to move towards God, but rather each individual, who is a specific existence, also known as a “hypostasis.” Here’s where it gets really exciting.

Each line drawn in an icon distinguishes the various forms (garments, facial features, buildings, etc.), thus giving each form a specific "hypostasis." If lines didn’t do this, you’d just have blobs of color. However, each of these lines, each of these hypostases, have to work harmoniously together to give the whole composition meaning. When drawn well, the lines generate movement and energy, which draws the viewer into a relationship with the icon. Kordis also writes that each hypostasis has to be reconciled with the whole composition. This means that it looses its individual autonomy to acquire a common energy and a common point of reference. He says that in this way each line is purified of its passion. If this didn't happen, you'd have a work of Picasso rather than an icon.

Wow! This describes the Christian life perfectly. We, as individuals, are a part of human nature, but human nature doesn’t exist as a thing by itself. Human nature needs a specific mode of existence, such as an individual, i.e., hypostasis. Yet, the process of salvation is to do the will of God. We learn to do this by conforming our individuality to his will, or, in short, we loose our individual autonomy to acquire a common energy. In short, just like the line in an icon that seeks to reconcile itself to be a part of the larger composition, we too seek to reconcile ourselves to God so that we can be a part of the larger composition, which is participation in the energies, or life, of God. When we loose our independence to exist in harmony with God, then we are not static, but rather we exist in a relationship and have communion with God.

This brings us full circle – the icon as communion. Of course Kordis goes on to talk about what sort of lines fit this profile and what lines do not (and why). He also goes on to talk about the overall composition of an icon and how it must have balance. Because the Prosopon School of Iconology (in New York City) has a large influence in the Orthodox iconology world (especially in the United States), let me compare Kordis’s argument to them. The Prosopon School develops their theology also in terms of deification. However, their theology centers on color and how color is built up in such a way as to transfigure the individual ("In your light, we shall see light"). What the Prosopon School is to color, Kordis is to line. In short, I believe both schools of thought are complimentary and I’d love to see someone bring them together.

About the Author

Paolo Croce graduated with a degree in civil engineering at the University of Napoli Federico II in 1979. He finished his master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Colorado in 1982. He is a professor of geotechnical engineering at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, Italy. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Italian Geotechnical Society (Associazione Geotecnica Italiana [AGI]), where he is a member of the AGI Committee for the Guidelines on Jet Grouting. He has 30 years of professional experience, and has authored several articles in geotechnical journals and conferences.

Alessandro Flora graduated with a degree in civil engineering at the University of Napoli Federico II in 1989. He finished his PhD in geotechnical engineering jointly from the University of Napoli Federico II and Roma La Sapienza in 1995. He is a professor of geotechnical engineering at the University of Napoli Federico II. He is the author of approximately 100 research articles published in main international journals, conference proceedings, and books. He is a member of the Italian Geotechnical Society (Associazione Geotecnica Italiana [AGI]), where he is a member of the AGI Committee for the Guidelines on Jet Grouting.

Giuseppe Modoni graduated with a degree in civil engineering at the University of Napoli Federico II in 1994. He finished his PhD in geotechnical engineering jointly from the University of Rome and the University of Napoli in 1999. He is a professor of geotechnical engineering at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio (Italy). Good for those looking for basic knownloedge.
Lack of technical data for JG application. Only wide ranges for drilling parameters that are searchable in the internet.
Anyhow, a good reference since there is no much books about the subject.

An important, forward-thinking, much welcome book

As someone diagnosed with BPD, I have done a lot of research on the condition, both online and by reading any book written on the subject. Many of those books (except for BPD Demystified)are extremely outdated, even if they're only a few years old. And many of them were disappointedly irresponsible, being quite negative and insisting that the prognosis was always dire and/or perpetuating the huge myth that those diagnosed with BPD are basically manipulative.

I say this because this book is different. It has the latest information on BPD, from what it is, how it may come about, what therapies are out there, if medication helps, and, quite important, speaks about new research on the brain and how this research shows actual physical differences in those with BPD. The book succeeds most in 2 particular ways: (1) In the way it is organized. Well-written chapters, clear headings and subheadings, easy for anyone and everyone to understand, and comprehensive summaries at chapter ends to note the main points. The books is also divided into Parts I and II, to make the focus and direction even clearer. For this alone, it is a book I would recommend to anyone interested in BPD, whether a professional, consumer, family member, friend, student, etc.

And furthermore, (2) The Survival Guide does not take one position and stubbornly adhere to it. It recognizes that there are many differences among those diagnosed with BPD, even as the similarities in how they "match" the criteria kinda puts us all in the same group. Of all the information out there, it presents the most "open" view, meaning that it is informative and hopeful and recognizes that this is a complex condition but that it is indeed treatable. And the authors cite many studies to back up their points. They don't pretend to have all the answers, but instead create an opening for real dialog and discussion.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly, without any reservation whatsoever. It will educate you, let you see the individuality of people diagnosed with BPD, and present you with the latest in therapy and in research, without prejudice. I am thankful for this book. It is honest and impartial. And perhaps above all else, that's what BPD literature presently needs the most.

Informative, positive, highly recommend

I was preparing for a presentation for NAMI and was asked to help clients, family members, and other professionals understand BPD. I found this to be an important task due to the negative information that is out there on BPD. This book was published just prior to the date of the presentation and I used it as a main source for the presentation and recommended it to all who attended. I also highly recommended it to my consultation team as something they may benefit from reading as well as to recommend for their clients. I found this book to be very informative, describing BPD from the model used within DBT therapy. The book was hopeful and inspiring to me in working with clients with BPD and I hope this book is read by many. I thank the authors for writing a book that is so user friendly. Several of my clients have benefited from this book already!

This book is great for those suffering from BPD! Don't by walking on Egg Shells! It makes those with BPD look like a monster which isn't true! Buy this! Its also great for loved ones who are trying to understand the disorder. High recommended! A keeper! Offers coping skills. A suggestions of treatments that might help as well as self-harm and suicide prevention. Its nice to see your own behavior and how it might be helped because YOU have to be the one to fix it!

The guidelines have evolved from a series of symposia on Ergonomic Guidelines and Problem Solving. Initially experts in each area selected were asked to write draft guidelines. These guidelines were circulated to participants at the symposia and to other experts for review before being comprehensively revised. In some instances these guidelines cannot be considered complete but it is important now to put some recommendations forward as guidelines. It is hoped that as new research emerges each guideline will be updated.

Each guideline has been divided into two parts. Part I contains the guidelines for the practitioner and Part II provides the scientific basis or the knowledge for the guide. Such separation of the applied and theoretical content was designed to facilitate rapid incorporation of the guide into practice.

The target audience for this book is the practitioner. The practitioner may be a manager, production system designer, shop supervisor, occupational health and safety professional, union representative, labor inspector or production engineer. For each of the guidelines, relevant practitioners are described.

Topics covered include work space design, tool design, work-rest schedules, illumination and maintenance.

About the Author
Anil Mital is Professor of Industrial Engineering and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Director of Industrial Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He is also the Founding Director of the Ergonomics and Engineering Controls Research Laboratory and former Director of Industrial Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He holds a B.E. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Allahabad University, India, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Kansas State University and Texas Tech University, respectively. He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, International Journal of Industrial Engineering and author/coauthor/editor of nearly 400 technical publications including 20 books. His research interests are in the areas of Applied Ergonomics, Application of Systems Methodologies to Ergonomics, Metal Cutting, Economic Justification and traditional Industrial Engineering. Dr Mital is the Founder of the International Society (formerly Foundation) of Occupational Ergonomics and Safety and a Fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and Past Director of its Ergonomics Division.

The author, Markus Lenz, was born in 1975 and lives in Frankfurt, Germany. He is a private pilot and an economic historian and was collecting aerial photographs of the Trolley Mission.

It's free. Too bad the author didn't include the bombing images of Coventry, or London. The first long range bombing was done by the Central Powers led by Germany in World War One.
Good images of the results of the Allies bombing during WW 2. Keep mind that Germany also did.long bombings.

This is one book about leadership that you should read!

I am skeptical about books on leadership. Most are written by persons who have reached positions of hierarchical authority in organizations and then anointed themselves "leaders." They don't talk about the political infighting and maneuvering that got them the job. Instead they wax eloquent about their skill in developing people - skills that frequently exist only in their imagination and the book they have written which book is often fiction parading as non-fiction. I was a contributing editor for one of the major business magazines and have met plenty of CEOs. I will leave it to you to guess how many times insiders have told me that the book their chief has written is wildly off the mark.

I have not met any of the persons that David Marquet commanded, but I will lay a substantial wager that many will follow him wherever they can.

Full disclosure: I am biased. I think that David is a leader, not a commander or a CEO or a senior officer but an authentic leader, for two reasons: 1) his views conform largely to my own, and 2) He undeniably moved a top of the line US nuclear submarine form bottom of the heap to the top by many objective measures.

David's views on leadership, and I repeat I heartily endorse these, are:

1) "Our greatest struggle is within ourselves. Whatever sense we have of thinking we know something is a barrier to continued learning."
2) The way to build a great team is to push decision making down, way down. The more each person feels he has the ability to do what he needs to in his immediate working environment, the more he will "own" his job and the more engaged he will be.
3) Engaged people will bubble with ideas about how to make the whole enterprise better. Some of these ideas will be relevant to a particular section and some for the entire organization. For the larger scope ideas, the originators will go out and get the cooperation/approval of others necessary to make the improvement happen.
4) It is not enough to push the decision making way down. You also have to send down responsibility, authority and the requisite resources. If you do not do this simultaneously, you simply increase the frustration level. Would you invite some one to come and smell dinner but not eat it? Case closed.
5) The mission is critically important. What is it, how is it defined and communicated, and is it a critical determinant of what decisions are made and how they are made? The answers to these questions will determine the success of the organization.

There is much more but these give you the picture. There are wonderful anecdotes throughout the book. For example, Marquet relates an incident where he was denied the opportunity to sail with a submarine whose command he was to assume within a month. He just wanted to get a quick read on what he would soon be facing. The departing captain refused to take him for many reasons mostly unexplained. One explained reason was that Marquet would have taken up scarce sleeping space. What is interesting is the lesson Marquet draws from this incident and how it shapes his own future actions. I will quote directly from the book to illustrate this:

"Even though this 2-day underway period would be greatly useful in sustaining Olympia's quality performance after he departed, he apparently had no interest in helping facilitate that. Could I fault him? In the navy system, captains are graded on how well their ships perform up to the day they depart, not a day longer. After that it becomes someone else's problem.

I thought about that. On every submarine and ship, and in every squadron and battalion, hundreds of captains were making thousands of decisions to optimize the performance of their commands for their tour and their tour alone. If they did anything for the long run it was because of an enlightened sense of duty, not because there was anything in the system that rewarded them for it. We didn't associate an officer's leadership effectiveness with how well his unit performed after he left. We didn't associate an officer's leadership effectiveness with how often his people got promoted 2, 3 and 4 years hence. We didn't even track that kind of information. All that mattered was performance in the moment."

To truly understand how valuable this type of thinking and approach is, ponder this question: If the "leaders" of our financial institutions knew that their bonuses were dependent on how the executive decisions they made would play out over the next five years, and those bonuses were subject to being recovered within that period, do you think we would still have had the blow-ups that wrecked so many venerable institutions and nearly destroyed our financial sector?

There is one other reason I find this book invaluable. We all know that a good question is worth more than an hour of detailed instruction. Socrates certainly thought so. Each chapter has several profoundly thought provoking questions at the end. If you grapple with these questions, you may well find that your view of the world is being turned around. Here is a random example: "Are your people trying to achieve excellence or just avoid making mistakes?" Think about the implications of this for your organization.

Get this book and read it with your highlighter in hand. Probably a good idea to get two highlighters.

Turn it Around!

Using a leader-follower model of leadership may have worked in the past when tasks were primarily physical, but a leader-leader approach is far more effective and resilient in a more cerebral and technical society. This is the story of how a Navy captain took command of a nuclear sub (the Santa Fe), whose crew was unempowered, uninspired, and performing poorly, and how that captain literally turned things around in short order by treating followers as leaders. This is a worthy read, but I caution that such personal stories have inherent biases and may not be generalizable to every organization. However, this is an excellent example of applying much less of a top-down, hero’s model and much more of a collaborative, coaching model to leadership practice. Risking such a paradigm shift for a military officer at the height of his career is ironically heroic. The book’s simple message: Control-Competence-Clarity. Push down (distribute) authority and control, ensure competence to execute, and communicate with clarity for consistency. One favorite quote: “Don’t move information to authority, move authority to the information.”

Single greatest treatise on leadership I've read.

I found this book fascinating in its challenge of the well established leadership model assumption. The eloquent dismantling of the leader-follower model is wonderful. The leader-leader model that replaces it is even better! I served in the submarine fleet more than 12 years after Mr. Marquet commanded his boat, but the effects of his success are still readily apparent. My fellow nukes don't need to be told why that is so impressive but let me elaborate for others. Our culture in the Nuclear Navy is so unique and forcefully strong it's hard for an outsider to understand. In short, the devotion to excellence is so severe we have operated hundreds of reactors over millions of nautical miles, for over 60 years without a single process safety accident. This culture of excellence is so ingrained and so strong that for anything to change it those changes would have to be unquestionably profound. Mr. Marquet provided exactly that. He put those things in his book and translates them well to business, but I assure you, the proof of their value is in the fact that the Nuclear Navy has incorporated his concepts, and become better for it.

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- This retelling of a 2,000-year-old Persian folk tale has the straightforward clarity of one of Aesop's fables. When incredibly wealthy King Artaxerxes takes a walk into the desert, his subjects strew his way with luxuries. But the only gift that gives him pleasure is a cool drink of water when he is thirsty. In the course of illustrating this wholesome message, Manson gives his readers page after page of lavish animated scenes, apparently derived from ancient Persian wall carvings, which depict in glorious detail the tempting self-indulgence of the king's life before he stumbles into the moral. While there is neither the archeological thoroughness nor the artistic integration of text and illustrations which is found in the earlier retelling of mid-Eastern legend in Bernarda Bryson's Gilgamesh (Holt, 1967; o.p.), Manson's work is for younger readers and does a lively job of giving a sense of ancient times. The text has a pleasant rhythm which begs to be read aloud. As in Linda Shute's Momotaro the Peach Boy (Lothrop, 1986), this story is enhanced by a small source section at the end which gives more detail of life at that place and time. tale with a nice lesson, but few surprises

When wealthy King Artaxerxes gets bored with all his treasures, he takes a walk (not unlike the Buddha, I suppose), and along his route, he is offered still more treasures and riches. He turns them all down, then feels thirsty. Only when a poor young boy offers him a drink of water does he show any gratitude. He holds his water cup with pride and joy, and cherishes it beyond all matter of treasure.
Christopher Manson packed the pages with imagery. Most pages are crowded with pictures of numerous Persians, dressed in traditional garb, accompanied by their objects of art and craft. Drawn with brilliant detail, the illustrations convey a richly remembered (or imagined?) Persia of the past. Most hues are some variety of brown, gold, or earthtone, giving Artaxerxes' desert journey a realistic look.
The story is predictable, but the quality retelling, illustrations, and lesson more than offset that shortcoming.
_A Gift for the King_ is a valuable addition to any library, home or otherwise.
